Re: Info needed on AO 820 "tome"
mrsonchus » Fri Sep 11, 2020 2:54 pm You'd be surprised how good an ordinary razorblade may perform when well-mounted.. Here's a post of mine from way-back Quite impressive Mr Sonchus .Perhaps I should just find a good source for cello tape and save my pennies until I can pay $200 for a low profile...

Interesting Bob. I would not have thought there would be enough blade exsposed or cycles per minute to create chatter.probably chatter quicker than comfortable

Re: Info needed on AO 820 "tome"
Thanks for the quick response MrSonchus. My interest has evolved toward botany and I think I would like to pursue that area. I just stumbled across a blade holder shown in the 820 ref manual which shows a Model 966 razor blade holder which mounts into the standard knife holder. Screenshot 966.png-00...

Info needed on AO 820 "tome"
Are there blade holders available for the AO 820 which allow the use of regular razor blades? If so where might I locate one and what might I expect to pay? I presume if available it would clamp into the standard blade holder. Will also appreciate any alternate info or suggestions.

Re: Hot plate?
Although I have a slide warmer and have used it preparing slides in crystal growth I generally get better results with longer drying times. I would think a coffee warmer with a small ceramic tile sitting atop it would work well.

Not exactly sure what you're looking for but............... You might find this link interesting. It's a DIY which I've used occasionally and pretty simple to make but can be difficlt to clean. There are others including a couple made with salvaged binocular prisms which is a little more complicated...

Here's a link to the most simple workable DIY slicer I've seen for soft samples. It also eliminates the need for tissue support. (carrot, potato, wax, etc.)

Re: more crystals
I'm certainly far from an expert, but the images look pretty good to me. If you haven't already you might try varying the drying time, and/or the liquid used. Also some sources of ascorbic acid have more impurities. I'm sure you are already aware of this but just a reminder.

Re: Digital microscopes. This site seems to look down on them
You have sparked my curiosity denodan. Would you recommend a bird jones telescope? The microscope you asked opinions for is in a sense microscope world's equivalent of such a telescope. It has a less than desirable bang for the buck value. You have received honest and knowledgeable replies to your q...

I appreciate having both and truly enjoy using each. It's a difficult matter for me to chose one over the other. It's as if they compete each with the other to gain my attention. Fortunately they have yet to inflict feelings of guilt on my psyche. Of course each has strong and weaker traits m...

Thanks for the reply Radazz. I've wondered about the use and possible effect of vacuum in crystallography. Yes, it can take a fairly long time for the solutions or colloidal dispersions to dry even in normal atmosphere. I find the nicer crystals more often with slower growth but do use a slide warme...

A couple of questions please. Were you using a commercial vacuum chamber? What was the vacuum measuremen...

Thanks for the info. I could list them separately on this forum... But I don't currently have time... And I think hobbyists who want this gear would be willing to checkout the link & pics. I think the manipulators will be of interest. Wow! High dollar items with no returns, no warranty, as is, etc....
