Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

Boy, you are keeping me busy. Spending my 74th birthday online! My surplus chair is so bad, an ergo height for the desk is 24", think I will get a new chair. My Nikon, due shortly, is an Eclipse E600, the inverted is a Biostar. Your ICM must be the 405? What a cool looking scope. When I mentioned fe...

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

I will check next week about the filters, all I know right now is that it is a Trane heat pump. Might be possible to incorporate the filters at the vent. Looked at the Dazor lamps on Ebay, some affordable, some really expensive, they might clash with my white Nikon! I already have the lineoleum. I h...

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

Hi, Okta. The architect doesn't care a bit, he just needs to finish the plans! I have pretty much ruled out the center fixture because of shadows. I would like long rows of 4' tube types about 24" from all the walls. I have a lot of task lamps for problem spots. The room has positive air flow from t...

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

Hey, Charlie, Washington is one spread out state. You can snow ski in the morning, water ski at noon, scuba dive afternoon, and ocean surf in the evening. Or, as some do, collect diatoms in Puget Sound! I am moving to the dryest city in the state, Sequim, so I'll be enjoying lots of natural light th...

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

Now that's an idea. I was going to attach a floor plan, but the room is so simple. 8' by 10'. Computers on left 8' wall, 3 scopes on 10' wall, and misc on the right side 8' wall. The left over 10' wall is for the door and storage. The garage is lit that way. So, you think if I put a 4' dual tube dif...

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

I'm using the independent switches, that's a really good idea. Trying to drag my feet on this lighting, as I don't
have the Nikon with its camera to see how lighting will be best arranged. How big a partition do you think I need?
My specimens don't splatter much!!

Re: New lab lighting advice really needed

That's what I'm puzzling on now. I think if I put one fixture close to and parallel to the South wall, it will light the 3 scopes very well. The 2nd fixture could be in a North South orientation, or just parallel and behind the other. I can always add fixtures if I plan ahead. I had less trouble wit...

New lab lighting advice really needed

I have no experience with this, so any help will, well, help. The room is 8 x 10, with 9' ceiling. Ceiling will be white, and the walls light grey. A narrow 8' window sits high in the South wall. There will be 3 big scopes and 2 computers mostly along the South wall. I plan a specimen prep desk on t...

Re: Air conditioning new lab

We should be moved in this time next year, and I will post pictures. There will be a lengthy honey-do list for the rest of the house, and I have to put down a floor and molding before the scope desk can be solidly mounted. OMG, it just dawned on me that rubber covebase would be easier and quicker th...

Re: Air conditioning new lab

My goal, after hours of reading, is positive air pressure, and temperature control. The computers generate a lot of heat, and the lighting. The room is very close to the heat pump, which has a non-commercial hepa type filter. I checked out your suggestions, and they didn't seem as efficient or quiet...

Air conditioning new lab

The lab is nearing design completion. Size 8' by 10', big daylight window, dedicated ac line for the 8 outlets, 8' linoleum counter-top set to proper height, padded linoleum floor, a nearly air- tight door, space for both a 4' and a 6' desk/table, and massive storage area! I had to convince the buil...

Thank you, very helpful, got some more ideas. Under the desk shelving, monitor placement, and
security. My dad served on the Lexington, til we sunk it, and left me his pearl handled service pistol,
and a real Samuri sword.

Re: Mechanical stage for stereo microscope

Radazz, could you please post a wide angle shot of your workspace? It looks like
you are using a pre-built laminate kitchen countertop. I have an 8' piece I want to
put on one side of a 6' x 8' unfinished room. Are you happy with your lighting?

I bought a plate that was thicker than the original glass plate. My stage is a vintage
Olympus, so its mounting is completely different.

I'm speechless, those are just gorgeous. Might you pass along where you
got small petri dishes? The only ones I can find are extremely expensive.

Re: Mechanical stage for stereo microscope

Would those pins unscrew? My stereozoom uses a large diameter plate, so I bought a few cheap imported discs and fastened the stage to a disc. If the specimen needs something special I have the other plate for other clips. Having the stage rotate is really handy, but I also need to be able to lock it...

Re: New lab for three big scopes

I will have to do a mock-up for sure. I am waiting for funds to move around before I have the Nikon to set dimensions. The poor card table is way too high. I tried the computer desk, but the chair drops so far down I need two dense pillows to bring me up to the height of the BioStar. This is bizarre...

Re: New lab for three big scopes

The countertop will probably fasten to the washer/dryer wall, so thanks for that tip. A cushioned vinyl floor, awesome, thanks. Wife said no to a heated tile floor. The chair will be a challenge because the Nikon is so tall. I like desks with 2" holes on top so the cords can drop down into strip out...

Re: New lab for three big scopes

My wife suggested I put the scopes on a lazy susan, at least she wants a garage sink. :D Could your friend design a motorized lab chair? I will probably end up against an exterior wall, so I'm opting for a sealed daylight window. The floor is hard troweled and sealed. The garage is almost 700 sq ft,...

Re: New lab for three big scopes

What I should have said is whatever size I want will be dedicated to microscopy, and it is a garage partition. We meet with the builder in a few weeks to try and nail down customizations like this, so I need to have a rough plan ready. A sink would nice, and not so difficult if I plan ahead. Dale

New lab for three big scopes

My lab table has been an old card table that never has had more than one scope at a time on it, just due to tinkering with the others. Quite soon I will have my 3 permanent (!) scopes all up and running. I am not sure the card table will support a Nikon e600, an AO Biostar, and a Stereozoom, all at ...
