Re: Pine Cone Scale Sections

Great discussion! I believe the results of stacking have a lot to do with the subject matter. I took several stabs at producing a decent stack of cotton pollen today, and can't say I'm thrilled with any of them. Some I deleted right away. Yes, I use All Methods too, seems like it'd be silly not to h...

Even though it isn't my area, this is easily one of the most fascinating threads ever, for me! The excellent photography really helps bring the explanations to life, and makes this little unfolding drama the next best thing to visiting your lab and watching over your shoulder -- which I would dearly...

Re: Flattened Spirogyra

Squeezing cover glass: many years ago there used to be a mechanical device for doing this (I think it was called compressorium or something along those lines). I hope apochronaut sees this and perhaps give us more illumination on that. I'm certainly no apochronaut, but until he gets back here's thi...

Re: Pine Cone Scale Sections

Beautiful images! And interesting discussion - I have been experimenting with image stacks on diatoms, and have run a series or 3 image stacks and 6 image stacks, and seem to consistently prefer the 3 image stack results.

Rod, you're using Combine ZP aren't you?

Re: Flattened Spirogyra

I'm lost. Is the weed flattened because it's being squished, or due to effects of image stacking? And what do the cover slips have to do with it (yes I know about objective lens compensating factor)??

Very cool image - one of these days maybe I'll shoot something that's still alive...

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed

I left the lens in place as discussed on my AO21 adapter discussion. I was, perhaps, a bit rash and prematurely removed that lens set. One of these days I might see about reinstalling it since I keep everything and never throw anything away like a good hoarder. Probably be best to get anothe...

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed

Phil, I believe that is precisely what I'm looking for. Is this the same source for such bits that you have mentioned previously? I wasn't quite aware he's in Russia. But yeah, I want to eventually end up with a piece that bayonets to my T3i, then dovetails into the photo tube. If this fits my AO ph...

Re: LED conversion?

That brings up a good question I have been wondering about: what do the newest big time microscopes come with these days? My Nikon E-600 and Olympus BX45 both sport 100W halogen lamps; granted, they predate LEDs by a decade or so, but what do today's equivalent stands come with (I'm not sure if they...

Thank you, all! It's a ton of fun, can't get over how many more options this new equipment gives. So here, I pull out the stops: 100x, with lens and condenser both oiled, looking at Cymbella and Pleurosigma frustules bunched together, adding the 1st order red compensator, adjusting the prism to suit...

AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed

Title says it all. I want to replace the shutter part of my AO photo tube with an adapter that bayonets to my Canon T3i. The phototube has been gutted and works fine with the camera body balanced up top, but it probably wouldn't hurt to make things a little more secure. Pictures of the fitting below...

Proof indeed. I have seen some pretty impressive images with UV light (shorter wave length) as well - not that I would go there, as one can not view the Diatoms directly as it is extremely harmful to one's eyes. http://www.mikroskopie-ph.de/index-Diatom-3.html ^^^ Just spent an hour looking through...

While Rod keeps himself amused (shhh, don't disturb him, took me forever to get him settled down), here's a pic from today, where I was bound and determined to image some micro pores in Navicula punctuae. I think it came out pretty good ... okay, I'm thrilled with it, and believe there's still impro...

Not sure that's a good idea. Rod would probably just put a Stentor on it and kill the poor thing... Don't know if I mentioned it, but the tiny pores in the puntctua in the Navicula frustules are relatively easy to see through the eyepieces at 1000x if everything is set up nicely.
