Re: First Go At DIC Imaging
Here's the photomicography rig du jour : Zeiss WL DIC, Canon T3i on phototube with 2.5x relay lens. Camera is operated remotely on the laptop via Canon Utilities software. Model airplanes not included. Note the stage has been rotated to adjust sheer angle on specimen, and camera rotated to compose p...

First Go At DIC Imaging
My camera adapter finally arrived, and I wasted no time trying it out, as this is something I've eagerly anticipated for many moons. Just I suspected, there is a LOT of versatility in DIC imaging, lots of things to adjust and play with. Besides the usual balance of shutter speed, ISO, and condenser ...

Re: loupe purchase advice
For my money, it's best to always go with the widest field, highest eyepoint oculars available whether you wear glasses or not. But to answer your question, I can't see where you'd have any problem with the Belomo. I use mine while wearing my readers, and just now tried it again to be sure before po...

Re: loupe purchase advice
I did a little messing around to see if I could answer some questions. First, I tried a reversed 15x eyepiece as a loupe, and found it a pretty poor one with tons of spherical aberration, only sharp in the center 1/3 or so. Next, I compared the 10x Belomo loupe to a couple of 10x microscope eyepiece...

Re: loupe purchase advice
I have been using loupes since the late 70's for photography (back when we would examine slides, negatives, and prints), rock & minerals, and for just about anything and everything else. Have also seen a zillion loupe discussions of forums. It's one of those things where if you ask ten people, you g...

I don't like DIY DIC because it isn't DIC. My vote goes to "...we should call it the van Egmond filter and honour the man."

Yep, I'd have to call that one of the most remarkable photomicrographs I have ever seen. Just as with an actual viewing through a microscope, one may "go exploring", which is practically unheard of in a single image! Thanks for posting, the span of two years has done nothing to lessen its impact. 8-...

I like the little short guy on the end! I can see where you may be tempted to do something to make the set look more uniform, but the difference in configuration is much more interesting to my eye. Also love the tools and work space shots! I also have several sets of gunsmith's screwdrivers, and par...

Re: AO 10 LED Conversion
I agree with that 100% when it comes to indoor lighting - I can't stand cool white bulbs or fluorescent lighting, ugh! But lots of people obviously see no problem and even prefer it, just personal preference, like you say, I suppose. But when it comes to the view in compound microscope, I want to se...

AO 10 LED Conversion
I'm pretty stoked - finally got busy and converted my travel scope from 20W halogen illumination to self-contained, LED. I use an AO 10 (shorthand for American Optical Series 10) as a travel scope. Not field scope, but travel scope, that I take along to use when I visit places for weeks on end as I ...

Re: Shipping microscopes
Box in a box is good. Here's the box my Zeiss WL DIC scope came in last week, ouch! But good ol' Paul had carefully packed the microscope in three boxes, then packed those boxes in the big outer one you see here, with a ton of peanuts compacted in to suspend them. As I unpacked, you can bet I paid p...

There's no question about it, playing around with crystals is great fun and endlessly fascinating, definitely one of the greatest ways to pass pleasant hours with a microscope.
