Re: Need some help on this one

I am thinking that there was not enough detail in the video to allow for a definitive identification. Bruce Taylor said he thought it was,""some kind of haptorid." The Micscape contributor on protists, Richard Howey, said, "I'm afraid I won't be much help on this one; it's is indeed an odd organism....

Re: Have you seen an Amphileptus eat a Vorticella?

I watched Amphileptus for hours and haven't seen it eat anything. I really enjoyed your video as it is the first time I see the way it eats. Thanks. I had never seen it eat until recently when my samples happen to have lots of Vorticella. I think that's the secret, there has to be lots of Vorticell...

Re: Need some help on this one

Is there no evidence of flagella? No, I did not see any flagella on either of the two organisms I observed. Bruce Taylor said that it is some type of Haptorid, but beyond that he wasn't sure. I can't convince myself that it's a Lacrymaria because of the body shape and the ameoboid-like movement you...

Yep, it has an Amoeba look to me as well. But it also has a Lacrymaria look. A Lacrymeba?

Re: Need some help on this one

Look for all the world like an amoeba doing a very credible impersonation of a lacrymaria. Exactly! Thus my puzzlement. I'm guessing that it IS Lacrymaria, just not Lacrymaria olor. There are several species of Lacrymaria, so maybe it's one of them? I'll post on this thread if I learn anything defi...

Need some help on this one

Reminds me of Lacrymaria, but I've never seen this Amoeba-like movement in Lacrymaria. Also, never saw the extreme neck extension characteristic of Lacrymaria with this organism.

Re: Death Doubled

I would also vote for adding more water for a more uplifting story, though I understand it is not always possible. To be totally transparent, I had the phrase, "the fragility of life" in my mind and wanted to use it in the video. Ending the video with that phrase seemed too negative to me so I thre...

Re: Death Doubled

Bill, I'm not critiquing you or your videos. They are very interesting, and please continue to post them! I'm just saying that you could have added more water and maybe the egg would had an opportunity to hatch, resulting in more uplifting story (but I have no idea what the expected time for a roti...

Re: Death Doubled

Interesting video. Why didn't you add water to stop crushing of the egg? I also think that methylcellulose (suggested many times on this forum) helps to prevent crushing by slowing evaporation and raising viscosity. About tardigrades. I keep reading (in popular press) how tough they are, but I'm sk...

An excellent video, Francisco! Very clear and detailed. I always watch when I see a cell about to complete a division. By the way, I put a link to a video of yours (Thuricola) on the Facebook Amateur Microscopy forum today in a thread about this organism. Hope you don't mind.

This is one of those sessile rotifers that attaches itself to a spot and stays there for life. Here's a link: http://www.micrographia.com/specbiol/ro ... ss0100.htm

Re: Small Ciliate

Sure looks like division to me. Sometimes I try to follow this until the division completes but it can take quite a while. Sorry, but I don't have a clue about the ID. There is a small group of protists and rotifers that I've learned to ID at the genus level, but not much beyond that.
