They are neat! I thought about collecting them but never got into it. I guess I don't need another hobby! Thanks for sharing!

Everything that came with it appears to be in the case and it is immaculate-- he was a surgeon, so it figures. Apparently you haven't meet many surgeons! You have a nice instrument that should bring your family years of educational fun. For a great staring point check out Pippa's videos h...

When I find a big Closterium, one of my favorite things to do is record the Brownian motion in the barium crystals. It's soothing, somehow.

Thanks for the offer, Kirby ... All O.K. via the library. Very interesting ... ‘though the IPA performance is rather worrying ! MichaelG. IPA leaves residue which is another good reason not use it by itself. I'm also very picky about solvent storage and more so after reading the article. Those labo...

Re: LED conversion for inverted microscope
the knurling was already there Yes I had a over 100 of them and they are all knurled. What I don't like is the abrasiveness of the knurling which is why I said I could do without it. It has the potential to create metal shavings which could get somewhere you don't want them. However unlikely its ju...

Re: How do bacteria get nutrition?
Why are they neither? At one time I think they were considered to be in the vegetable kingdom, along with algae. They are classified under the Monera kingdom. I am no expert but I guess it's because of the differences in how they eat. Like plants some do use Photosynthesis as Phil said and some can...

I also found a product once that is applied before your lubricant and is supposed to keep it from ending up where you don't want it. Kind of like a primer of sorts. These are known as ‘ Eplilames ’ ... used in watches, and available from several suppliers illustrated example: http://www.unimatec-eu...

Re: Brass Rack and pinions designed to run dry?
The wear your seeing on racks is likely abuse. If the pinion turns hard stop! There's a problem! I lube the dovetails and the pinion shaft but only apply a very light film of grease to the rack. However I don't lubricate all racks all the time. There's probably a lot of different opinions on this so...

How clean is your solvent!
I was just going through some of my files and ran into a hard copy of this interesting article. I thought some here would enjoy it. It's relevant to more than optics and worth reading even if you don't use solvents to clean lenses. https://www.osapublishing.org/ao/abstract.cfm?uri=ao-56-13-3875 Kirby

Re: Carl Zeiss Jena Nr. 154618 help!
For a mild abrasive that is safe on lacquer you can use Pre-Lim. It would take some effort but it's possible to rub through the finish if you get a little overzealous. When used properly it's a great product. Follow with a Renaissance wax or Johnson's. You have a nice instrument that will last for y...

I have also used a product called Ballistol, which is a gun cleaner and preservative, which cleans and preserves metal surfaces. The toothbrush will get the not so easy to reach areas in joints and crevices. With any products, after cleaning, make sure you wipe it well with a dry cloth and wipe it ...

Re: Carl Zeiss Jena Nr. 154618 help!
Be very careful cleaning the lacquered brass! Very diluted mild detergent with no alcohol is all you should use. Better yet clean it with Johnson's paste or renaissance wax. Also I would not recommend WD-40 or any aerosol on the lacquer either. It's not worth ruining the beautiful finish on that ins...

Hi, I am following this thread because I am interested to stack some microscopic images, and I am learning and educating myself :-p . With regards your bulkier subjects, is 40-45 images too far too much to stack? Would you compare 45 images vs 10 images and see if there is any difference or it is a...

That is a much thinner layer of foam than I was thinking of testing, but I suppose with how fast the shutter motion happens and the relatively small distance the camera would be expected to move even if completely unrestrained, maybe it is not too surprising that it still has ...

Re: Good places to find antique microscopes for sale online?
Be very careful buying them from eBay. When an antique microscope is dropped something will bend and it may not be obvious to the seller and certainly not in a photograph. Obviously these instruments have been around and have been knocked around so it is important to thoroughly check them out. I hav...

I think this is what hans was talking about when he suggested partially isolating the camera in a previous thread (see link below) Separating the camera completely as I do (using a tripod) does not stop the camera vibrating, it just stops the vibration affecting the sample. Yes, something like that...
