Re: A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
I agree with everyone! I believe this lower magnification does not benefit from stacking unless I was to try and include the legs etc. As you increase the magnification the eye, due to their geometry, benefit from the stacking procdeure. I will stack some photos are a much larger magnification. Init...

Re: A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
Not surprisingly the original without stacking is quite good. The SMZ-U is a phenomenal scope. The contrast in Method C looks better to me. For all the photos taken for the stacking there is not much of an improvement in detailing. Lots of overkill I am guessing due to not knowing the DOF etc. I can...

A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
Ok- These phots are of a Brown marmorated stink bug, an invasive species introduced into the U.S in the late 90's. All photos were taken using my Nikon SMZ-U, a canon T3I, and a 2.5X nikon projection lens. Mag set at 1.0X. The first photo is a single shot no post processing etc. The following shots ...

Re: Polarizing on the cheap
There is a guy on E-bay that sells custom made filter and polarizing sets. He sells polarizing kits for a variety of scopes. Here is one such listing for an AO 110: eBay item number:281361482150 I plan to try the ones for my Leitz models. I have an AO 110 POLSTAR but it would be interesting to insta...

Re: Acquired a few new scopes.
Well..She made some covers for Charles recently. She was a bit frustrated at the fact she did not have the scopes in her possession to make adjustments. So they seem very large but Charles can comment on them when he gets them. Now she is thinking of making them and selling them on E-bay. Though I d...

Re: Rat Flea (darkfield)
I have seen those but soooo pricey. Though like any hobby I guess it depends on your circumstances. Most protists etc. would probably not benefit too much from stacking.. Though I cant find any reference giving the "thickness" of a protist everything talks in terms of length. But assuming with a 40X...

Re: Rat Flea (darkfield)
Hmm.. the DOF of a 40X objective is about 1 um as mentioned in an earlier post. So you would need to be able to move the fine focus in 1 um increments "ideally". However given the WD is only about 0.2mm 200 um that means at best you could get 200 shots..hmm... https://www.cognisys-inc.com/products/s...

Re: Rat Flea (darkfield)
Given the "depth" of the flea and the accuracy of the fine focus on your microscope I would venture to say 82 stacks is overkill. For example when calculating the stack on my ant photos I took the depth of field, depth of field is determined by the distance from the nearest object plane in focus to ...

That's why I love this forum. If you were on a yahoo forum this would turn into a firestorm. You should be able to express yourself/opinions without any one getting annoyed. Not once have I seen anyone get annoyed despite differences in views etc.

Re: 40x objective question
Unless you own one of the more expensive models from NIkon, Leica, Olympus or Zeiss they do not even approach 100X. Most of the stereoscopes sold by companies such as Amscope go to 45X using a 10X eyepiece and a 4x objective. You are using a 10X eyepiece and a 40X objective = 400X HUGE difference. W...

Re: Garden Centipede @ 200x
If you collect a soil sample or a large sample of moss you can place it in a funnel under a heat lamp. The funnel can be positioned over a flask or jar. It will drive all kinds of creatures into the jar/flask. If you put a layer of alcohol at the bottom they will not be so apt to try and climb out. ...

Re: Ant Photos comparing set-up.
Is it worth $30? I guess that depends on how useful you find it. I made the cork mounted to the plexiglass for like $2. You can position the pins in the same way as the more expensive stage but it requires you to move the pin rather than rotate on an axis. That can be very cumbersome if viewing the ...

Re: Leitz objective question
"Apochronaut" is correct. The EF - "Extended Field" or "Even Field", depending on the author of the paper, objectives will be fine if you use the suggested eyepieces. The Plan objectives have a field of view from 20-28 depending on the objective with lower mags having a larger field of view. The rec...

Acquired a few new scopes.
Recently acquired another B&L Stereo zoom mounted on an R-stand. It came with the trinoc option as well as a host of accessories. A great find! It is both optically and cosmetically perfect. The clarity and resolution is incredible given the cost and era. I can't say enough about the clarity and pre...

I take it is not easy to adapt a camera extension tube to fit directly the Meiji. Is there no local machine shop that can make an adapter? LOL Thanks Jim. Camera bellows are still popular for in studio lab work. I have a better set of bellows made by Canon. The Canon bellows have a built in focus rail of sorts and subsequently are heavier and more complex. So while it adds considerable flexibility in terms of focus etc, I am not sure t...

Re: Is this normal when stacking? Image shifts left/right when focusing (stereo microscope)
That is a normal phenomena when photographing or viewing through a single side of a stereoscope. As you get closer to the specimen it appears to shift to the left because the FOV of the lens is shifting in relation to the specimen. When viewing through both eyepieces you would not see or should not ...
