Re: Leica M80 Plan Objective

Very nice! Those achromats are OK and all but the atep up in going to a good plan objective is pretty big. The size differences between the achromat objectives and the plan achromat objectives is dramatic. As is the price differential! I am happy with the performance of the Wild objective. I want t...

Leica M80 Plan Objective

As many on this forum are aware I purchased a Leica M80 Stereoscope several years ago. It came with a 1x achromatic objective. The resolution of the M80 with a plan achromat objective is listed as 0.103. I am not certain of the resolution with the achromat objective but based on comparisons with oth...

Re: Does phase contrast make sense for its price?

I have an iris that is inserted between the objective and turret. It was made for Leitz objectives. I have never actually used it but such devices do exist, although quite rare.

Re: How to select lighting? [SMZ-U]

You used to be able to purchase a gooseneck led light from Ikea. That was one of my favorite set-ups. You can also find quite a few microscope illuminators on E-bay at very reasonable prices.

Re: Inverted scope

Thanks Phil. I believe I have some petri dishes with a 0.17mm glass bottom insert. I had planned on trying them with the Olympus IM as I have more 160 TL objectives than infinity corrected. I currently do not have any Reichert 45 mm objectives. However- I will take a look around.

Re: Inverted scope

I, myself, have 3 inverted microscopes. Whether or not they were worth the investment is subjective. How much did you or are you willing to pay? My most recent purchase was a Zeiss Axiovert. It came along with 2 other microscopes; A Nikon Microphot and a Zeiss compound scope. All three cost a little...

Apochromat- I acquired the SZ7 from an electronics company. It is quite possible the lenses were from another application as you suggest. At this point they are just paperweights.

Re: Need help B&L Lenses

Hmmm..what is puzzling is why they were in the wooden case with a B&L SZ7. Perhaps for lack of another storage area. There was also a 1x and a 2X threaded objective. I am guessing for the SZ1-4 microscopes. Although the diameter seems a bit large for that. Given I have never owned a B&L sz1-4 I am g...

Re: Need help B&L Lenses

Those are new to me. But I have seen a few different eyepieces with threads at the top; meant to attach eye guards. Yes, so have I. However, these are 33mm in diameter. I have not tried yet to see if they will screw in place of the original focusable eye tubes. Just a thought. Though I do not know ...

Need help B&L Lenses

So I purchased a B&L SZ7 which came in an original wooden storage box. In the box there were 4 lenses 2 10x and 2 15x. They occupied slots obviously made specific for the lenses. They have threads on one end. I have never seen anything like these before. I'm guessing because there were 2 each, they ...

Depending on the base ,as mentioned, if it has the light/darkfield option you want a clear glass plate.

Stages for Stereo microscope

So I thought I would share a few pics of stages and/or devices I use to view specimens under a stereoscope. Some of these I shared previously. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q70/924/fjI0Fk.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q70/922/mSu40k.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/...

Re: [Beginner] Photography with Nikon SMZ-U

When you say you can't get the sensor in the right spot, you mean to be parfocal with the eyepieces correct? Because as you mentioned, it positions the sensor too "far away" to be parfocal. Yes, exactly. And of course if you just refocus to move the image circle knto the sensor you theoretically ar...

Re: [Beginner] Photography with Nikon SMZ-U

Here are some shots. I have used an adapter to mount my T3I directly to the camera port. Due to the distance to the cameras sensor, as mentioned, it is not parfocal with the eyepieces. However, given I generally tether my camera to my laptop and do not use the eyepieces when taking pics, the fact it...

Re: [Beginner] Photography with Nikon SMZ-U

It comes down to two things: how big the image circle is and where it's positioned. By default the smz-u puts out an image that's a bit over 27mm in diameter, which is actually larger than it was specced for. If you put an aps-c sensor with a ~27mm diagonal right on the image you get a nice image t...

Re: Good Stereo Microscope?

I agree. Not sure about a comment, in another post, regarding DSLR's having a potential for mirror interference, as I have used a DSLR on all my stereoscopes with no issue. I'm currently working on an SZ7 stand, adapting it to a B&L base from a compound scope. I recently purchased another SZ7 destin...

Re: Is this Paramecium multimicronucleatum?

I struggled trying to identify organisms to the species. I felt not doing so was just being lazy. However, over time and many papers ,I concluded that the ability and the time to determine the species went beyond my "hobby" and encroached on my other interests. So, I am now quite content to identify...

Re: A microscope for Christmas….

I believe a stereoscope would be a better first investment, especially for children. My experience has been that children quickly become bored with a compound scope if they can not see "something" immediately. In addition a compound scope tends to require a bit more prep for samples. Whereas with a ...

Yeah, m60x1, just like ol' grandpappy (the M8). It's very cool that they revived that standard--I wonder if the plan 1x design is a direct descendant too. Of course you can also directly mount a Zeiss SteReo objective on it too same thread (if they didn't cost a million skillion dollars). Exactly. ...
