Re: Three strange amoeboid organisms
Thanks 75RR. Adding some organic matter helps a lot too as it provides nutrients for the developing food chain.

Three strange amoeboid organisms
Recently I started suspending coverslips on the surface of water samples so they can develop a biofilm which attracts strange protists. Here are three examples of interesting amoeboid organism that I found. https://kopame.com/dmqk/dmqm/media/diplophrys.png Diplophrys https://kopame.com/dmqk/dmqm/med...

Older magnesium fluoride coatings degrade over time especially if acidic fumes have come into contact with them (say from an old school photolab).

Re: I ate a handgrante! (Litonotus cygnus digests a Coleps)
I agree that strong DIC does not help when you want to observe Coleps. Yes, I remember that Olympus objective being offered and you are also quite lucky to have the Zeiss version as well. These water objectives are amazing for observing aquatic organisms, in my experience way better than their oil c...

Really nice photos Jochen! I never thought Litonotus had a mouth big enough to eat a coleps. Btw which microscope and objective did you use here?

Re: Heliozoa. Fusión/fission?
Excellent and fascinating video, Francisco! This process is called plasmogamy, in which two cells can fuse into one. The cells fuse their respective cytoplasm and nuclei. I saw this in the heliozoan Actinosphaerium, as shown in the photo below. Actinosphaerium plasmogamy.jpg what a cool image, than...

Pesky buggers those Coleps are! I once observed (and filmed actually) a couple of Coleps individuals sucking out the contents of what I believe was a rotifer egg.

I suppose one could pop into an ophthalmologist and ask but I would not be surprised to get a blank look from them. So where is this cotton? Ask in the pharmacy I supp...

Probably the best scope Zeiss ever made and you can upgrade with whatever you wish, planapochromats with DIC and so on.
