Recently I started suspending coverslips on the surface of water samples so they can develop a biofilm which attracts strange protists. Older magnesium fluoride coatings degrade over time especially if acidic fumes have come into contact with them (say from an old school photolab).

I agree that strong DIC does not help when you want to observe Coleps. Yes, I remember that Olympus objective being offered and you are also quite lucky to have the Zeiss version as well. These water objectives are amazing for observing aquatic organisms, in my experience way better than their oil c...

Excellent and fascinating video, Francisco! This process is called plasmogamy, in which two cells can fuse into one. The cells fuse their respective cytoplasm and nuclei. Pesky buggers those Coleps are! I once observed (and filmed actually) a couple of Coleps individuals sucking out the contents of what I believe was a rotifer egg.

Probably the best scope Zeiss ever made and you can upgrade with whatever you wish, planapochromats with DIC and so on.
