Re: Can I swap the head and focusing block on this late Zeiss universal? s
Universal/Phomi heads are not readily exchangeable. There are little red/orange/yellow stickers with 3-4 digits on the head and foot (and on the Phomi power supply) that indicate any set of components with the same numbers have been optically precisely matched (and electronically for the Phomi expos...

Re: Live diatoms
I wish I had an appropriate eyepiece for direct projection, I tried a 10x Kpl-W once and got good quality images but as you said a rather small part of the image was being projected. Because of this I have to increase exposure or ISO so I switched back to afocal at the expense of some chromatic aber...

Re: Live diatoms
If you feel the image through the eyepiece is better than what you get in the camera you could try to alter your direct projection setup. Maybe try a different eyepiece (lifted by a couple of millimeters or so), if you have a Kpl one that might work well. Btw which one of your Zeiss scopes are you u...

Thats just one solution to the spherical aberration problem. Have a look at this link, it provides an in depth explanation of the problem and several solutions https://www.microinformatics.net/index. ... microscope

Re: Flagellates and bacteria in water/parsley after 3 days
Even if you set the correction collar to perfectly match the coverslip thickness the image might still lack contrast if the water column it too tall. Some people use thinner coverslips (no. 1) for plankton observations. So condenser prism II with the 40x/0,65 Plan DIC prism?

Re: Flagellates and bacteria in water/parsley after 3 days
So the objective is 40/0.95 Zeiss Planapo or Jena Apo? Even though these have a correction collar for limiting the amount of spherical aberration its still difficult to get sharp contrast unless your sample is really thin, so much so that most of the bigger organisms will be crushed under the covers...

Re: Flagellates and bacteria in water/parsley after 3 days
Surprising that there were flagellates in the parsley infusion, do you think these came from soil contamination?
Regarding video I would get rid of the phase plate for starters, never found that particularly useful for sharp contrast. What objective and prism combinations did you use here?

The other possibility is " beware of staring straight at the lamp filament or beam". Sorry, concurrent posting - does look like a lamp filament! Re: Zeiss 100w Halogen bulbs
Newer Zeiss lamphouses have a heat blocking filter which you can spot by its red reflective tint. Older ones (like the ones me and 75' use) don't have it. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4IYAAOSwkWRhgBVG/s-l1600.jpg There is a KG1 (IR blocking) filter in the base of some of the large research scopes ...

What a cool project! I don't think I've ever seen mica in the wild but most likely I haven't been paying attention. As you pointed out the success of this project depends on a high quality source of mica so my question would be where do you find the finest mica?

Sure fancy equipment might produce some interesting results but in the end its the specimen and its preparation that count the mo...
