Re: Issue with 2x and 1x objectives

I recently ran into this same problem. I bought a second Vickers M17 for the 1.25na achro' oil condenser and a second objective changer. The condenser is great but would not provide even full-field illumination for objectives below 6.3x and required swapping to to the original fip-top condenser for ...

Rotifer (Dissotrocha macrostyla)

A new rotifer found in the microbe aquarium. Powerful feeding currents. In the latter half of the video you can see the dorsal antenna being used to sense nearby dangers.

Can anyone ID this?

Not sure if this is a worm or nematode (other?), but unable to find anything similar on the web. Lives life at full throttle, observed for some time but wouldn't stay still for a decent shot. Odd behaviour, freed itself from this clump of detritus only to get entangled in another, and another, and s...

How are they eaten? Where is the "mouth?"
Hydra are essentially a hollow tube (blind gut), the feeding entrance is in the middle of the tentacle cluster. They can engulf large prey in short order. Here is a good video (not mine) of one in action: https://youtu.be/SS_HYY97ehw

Algae scraper for flat sided tanks

Scraper for collecting algae samples from flat sided aquariums and culture vessels. Useful for collecting encrusted flora/fauna for study. Slide the scraper vertically up the tank side with firm pressure (scoop section downmost), scrapings collect in scoop and can be rinsed out for examination. Made...

Re: Brown Hydra & unfortunate Ciliate

Nice video. Sort of looks like there are bulges of clear fluid swelling around the ciliate in the bright field shot 2:45 to 3:45. Any idea what that is? Related to the damage from the hydra? Thanks hans. I think this is cytoplasm leakage caused by the ciliate triggering one or more of the hydra's n...

Good work, well done. I've noticed these rest states too. Not sure if its due to lowered oxygen content under the coverslip, or just a behavioural trait?

Re: Filtering main light source vs post processing of RGB channels.

If your camera can shoot in RAW format the Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop has a 'remove chromatic aberration' feature. The colour range of the aberration you wish to remove and intensity can be set manually. Obviously only applicable for Photoshop users with a RAW capable camera, but worth mentioni...

Re: Red dot of light in pictures. How to get rid of it?

You mention in your previous thread that the image isn't par-focal with this photo adapter, and that it was only par-focal if you elevated it further (without eyepiece?). I'd suggest you try elevating it temporarily and see if the hot spot goes away.

Re: LED Lighting and optical resolution questions

I experimented with many LED solutions as a replacement source for the 100w halogen Köhler illumination on my Vickers M17. Inserting a diffuser at the light source does have a small impact on contrast on my scope (white balanced). This might not be the case on other scopes. If you are considering a ...

Re: Trying digital

The new generation AD1605 4k microscopes look very promising but prices (£500) are approaching that of a decent used (or new chinascope) trinocular stereo microscope, and you will still need to DIY your own transmitted illumination to be comparable. The AD407 based units seem to be the sweet spot fo...

Greg. If it bothers you stick to studying inert materials. Better yet, lock yourself away in in a sterile enclosure away from any microbes you may harm from leading a normal life. Remember not to bathe lest you destroy millions of helpless microbes daily. Don't worry, in a few days when you die (you...

Re: The Value of a 20x objective

My main setup is 6.3x 16x 25x 40x 50x(oil), 25x is by far the most used magnification once the subject has been spotted, 6.3x I find ideal for searching. 4x used mainly for larger crustaceans and plant sections.

I have a small bubbler running on a timer 12hrs on 12hrs off. For my tank I find this keeps the alae growth at a good level and prevents any stench.
