Disturbing occurrences lately
Over the last 3 days I have witnessed the cell wall rupturing on several ciliates... one Euplotes, two Loxodes and one P.busaria. I know what slides drying out looks like and this was not the culprit. The only other time I have seen anything like this is when all cells on my slide died from a commer...

Re: Lacrymaria, pluerostomatid and pretty ciliates
Great videos! Don't worry about family members who don't share your interest. Such special interests like microscop are better shared in a group or in a forum like this. Though one of my sons actually shares my interest in microscopy in so far as he sometimes comes to group meetings and helps me wi...

Lacrymaria, pluerostomatid and pretty ciliates
I spent several hours finding a Lacrymaria specimen to video. Several times I transferred one to a slide, observed it in a stereo microscope and then was unable to find it once the slide was on my BHS instrument. They seemed to just vanish. I realized after a while that they rush to the edges of the...

Thanks 75RR and also for the info !
Thanks Wes-- Actually I did put some of that sample into a culture dish with a kernel of corn . Not the exact drop that was on the slide though, I didn't think to do that but the next time I will !

Mastigamoeba
I have a fondness for the Mastigamoebas. The cilium is so mesmerizing. I wonder what the cilium is used for, it doesn't seem to be involved in locomotion.... perhaps some kind of sensor ? This one came from some algae collected at the edge of a local pond. It appears similar to the second Mastigamoe...

I like optics. And fine mechanics. I come from astrophoto so the razor-thin dof in microscopy kills me. Lacking a proper camera accessory, i shoot with a mirrorless APS-C through the eyepiece (does this add magnification?). I’ll post details of the setup in the relevant section. Having great fun id...

Re: Tried glycerin to slow down fast movers
I experimented some more with the MC solution, and did not have the same tragic results as the first two times. What I did find is that the protist were slowed down, but due to the increased vertical thickness under the slide cover, they were swimming in and out of focus so much I was unable to reco...

Thank you 75RR, Wes, and Asian. And thank you so much Bruce for the ID and discussion. I like learning as much as I can about these organisms and knowing something about their classification and environment helps a lot. Although I realize when I start looking these names up, a much deeper "rabbit ho...

Ciliate feeding frenzy
I abandoned my first culture due to an explosion of too many creepy amoebas. I started a new one with a small piece of detritus from a local pond sample to which I added one kernel of boiled corn. After 5 days there was a swarm of small flagellates. I looked at the culture two days ago and noticed a...
