Re: Long green ... ?
I think (I do sometimes) that its a cell of Closterium which has been helped with the growth by a chytrid sporangia. The encysted zoospore will penetrate the algal wall and so reach the cell contents. There the fungus establishes a nutrient gathering system.

I have just remembered that they were very, very thin not dome shaped at all. They reminded me of a Chines cheap umbrella with the vein running from a centre point straight out almost flat. If that's any help.

In my book it is Caloneis amphisbaena but what a pity the north and south nodules are not clear therefore not fully allowing a 100% I.D. When obtaining an I.D. the diatom must be shown in clear and positive fashion with no real obstructions. With this diatom we can make a good guess at it because of...

Charles I should have been more explicit what I would like to say is the 'Subject matter' not the photos themselves. How often do we see a palate from a fish?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I do not know who came up with the quote 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but it rings true when you see photos from Charles. So I am placing my polarized photos of slides that I have in my possession. Hope you note that a couple are quite out of the ordinary.

I think the colour in the diatom is caused by Chloroplasts and small oil globules. I could be wrong.

I know it sounds silly, but I could swear the one I photographed above was really more or less aware of what was going on, had fun interacting with me, and enjoyed posing for the camera. It was like having a lit...
