I think (I do sometimes) that its a cell of Closterium which has been helped with the growth by a chytrid sporangia. The encysted zoospore will penetrate the algal wall and so reach the cell contents. There the fungus establishes a nutrient gathering system.

I am not a doctor but what about 'Antibiotics' would they help clear the problem. Good luck for the future.

Charles I should have been more explicit what I would like to say is the 'Subject matter' not the photos themselves. How often do we see a palate from a fish?

I do not know who came up with the quote 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but it rings true when you see photos from Charles. So I am placing my polarized photos of slides that I have in my possession. Hope you note that a couple are quite out of the ordinary.

Members your help is needed to identify this fungi the two small buds were growing in my field with no other fungi about. As soon as I picked the fungi it started to wilt. Really great photos, glad to see you are naming the individual diatoms it makes your post a better post than just saying a diatom. You guy's surely know where to find the big ones.

The nearest I can come up with is Synura spore In the spore we can see a hyaline body which repressents a carbohydrate reserveof food called leucosin or chrysolaminar.

Yes very good images but if my mind drops into action I do believe that the centric diatom is one of your faviourites, anyway great photos.
I must get down to some diatom work been busy with 'Pond Life and Pollen'.

Great photo's but there is no way to identify what the individual diatoms.

The H. Peroxide was 9% as this is the highest % we can buy over the counter. It does work well.

Perhaps I have placed this in the wrong place.

Where is the raphe and the striae do not show up well do they?

I think the colour in the diatom is caused by Chloroplasts and small oil globules. I could be wrong.
