Those are some nasty greeblies living up your hooter manu, better have the ear nose and throat doctor look into it :D Nice conversion on the microscope, and great video with the ants too. If I can put in a request, I'd love to see ants eating a spider. Pull all its 8 legs off first of course. I did ...

Tangled up, I thought the little guy was just playing up for the camera, because of the way he looked over at the end.
Great clip, good detail in the claws.

I like this little fellows :-) Thanks for sharing. Post scriptum: is the background noise made by cicadas? So it must be hot in Australia right now? No, any sounds would be from me as I was close to the camera when filming. Nice clear video - looks like they're actually under a moss-leaf perhaps, r...

Hi Tom, well for starters I'd suggest a 'soft' stem - leaves are far more difficult to start with. All I use for hand-sectioning is a single-sided razor-blade - a packet of 10 is dirt-cheap! Well the blades arrived today, so tomorrow I'll go find some stems and try my hand at sectioning. After I've...

@coominya Thanks, trying to translate other's ideas into DIY gadgets. - this one is still experimental (quote "Q"), unfinished and undocumented. Yes... I have a few of those. My lamp (the one I overhauled and cleaned) developed a loose lens-flip mechanism and rather than looking into it I overhaule...

Watch this auction out. It should give you an idea of where to start your asking price.

That looks like a great place to visit ... and collect! I would suggest gathering samples of different seaweeds (one per sample jar) as it is where all the animalcules go for protection. Mind you do not let the water in the jars overheat on your way back - try and keep them cool. Yes it's a beaut p...

Excellent! I can use that as a reference for the local stuff. I have been going to a creek for my stocks but there is an extensive wetland area not far away so I'll go there next for some samples. In a week I'm off to a coastal town called Illuka on the pacific ocean, (see attached pic). It's by the...

So far I haven't found a really quick and effective process for cleaning of slides. Since I don't like to throw things away I will continue to look for one. I toss mine in a petri dish full of tap water, then every 4 days or so clean them with hand soap under a tap and dry with paper towel. A micro...

Most people say it is like looking down a tube but the tube sometimes, can reveal some valuable information that a wider field of view cannot show. Or that a wider field draws attention away from. I noticed this trend in astronomical eyepieces, the fields got wider and wider over the years, giving ...

I would suggest that you try the Zeiss "trick": If you have a low-NA objective, say an 10x/0.25 for this scope, rotate the condenser turret to highest phase position and see if it creates DF. I'll try that next time I power up the scope but I've subsequently ordered a set of DF filter inserts that ...

Same here - I use them a lot, and always re-use them. I also as you suggest have a 'to clean' tray, I call it my 'washing-up tray'. John B.
