Re: Simple cleaning of a partially frozen field diaphragm
The field aperture diaphragm is positioned directly above a first surface, 45 degrees mirror. In a camera lens the problem is there too but in practice it is less likely to show because the camera lens is used in the horizontal plane most of the time. With an analog camera you even had a new image ...

Re: Simple cleaning of a partially frozen field diaphragm
Hi Doron, I have a camera repair handbook that shows general techniques and special methods for camera of the 1970s and 80s, written by camera repairman Tomosy. The process you describe here is one of his standard methods to get a stuck aperture or leaf shutter going. After cleaning he applies light...

Re: Possible to lubricate iris-equipped objectives?
Hi Tim, don't use WD40, Pete is exactly right about the proper uses of it. With heating a microscope objective I would also be very careful to avoid damaging cemented lens groups. 40°C shouldn't be a problem, so you might carry it in the trouser pocket in an objective container and move it from time...

Zeiss Big Research Microscope from about 1911
Hi together, I don't collect microscopes but there a few collectible microscope types I'm interested in as much that I actually would buy one. One was a well equiped research microscope from around WW 1. I haven't really looked for one and thus it had to come to me: A Zeiss Big Resaerch Microscope f...

A way to improvise rubber eye cups is to pull a piece of bicycle inner tubing over them. Then turn the bicycle inner tube over itself and back over the eyepiece. This way you get a broader rounded edge towards the eyes.

On ebay you can find 12V LED-rings of different diameters for very little money. They are bright enough for low magnification work and are just 5mm thick. They sell under the name "angel eye".

Re: Leica DMIL, lots of micromanipulation gear, over 10K in objectives
Acceptable prices for equipment can vary a lot depending on the condition and the likelyhood of it being complete and running. To expect the sum of top prices for each part for a heap of stuff is not realistic. The only real problem with this is that these never-selling offers bloat the listings of ...

Hi demirci,
permanent marker can be removed with ethanol. Some components of it might have sunk into the paint and a shadow of the number might remain.
With which name can we call you?

Were there not also periplan eyepieces for the later 37mm optics? During the course of selecting eyepieces for my field microscope( all 37mm optics) I found an older set of 10X periplan that provide excellent corrections and a remarkably flat field to an 18mm f.o.v. They look like this and are quit...

Hi Bryan, I think your assumptions are right. Traditionaly without any calculation tricks the lower power objectives gave an image without much colour error and the higher power achromats and most apos needed a colour correction by the eyepieces. This still seems to be the case for your instrument. ...

Hi Bryan, the "B" designation was dropped at some point when bino tubes increased in market share. Hi Tim, when it first moves fine and then stiffens up there might be some old lubricant somehere that is dissolved over time and then slows dom the mechanism again. You might have to look more closely for old lubricants. Stages often have big sliding surfaces and don't like to move easily with greas...

I had a look through my biology books but didn't get any further.

this should be a forsythia.
I also have started to look at buds and think about what to do with them.
They might be a suitable victim for my glycerin soap embedding tests.

Hi together,
I think this is the diatom mountant to buy today: https://diatoms.nl/index.php?seo_path=p ... m-mountant
The Pleurax I use was made by Georg Rosenfeldt and another colleague from our group. It is darker in colour but really nice to use.

Hi Peter, I think basic light microscopes have not been developed much further in these decades - they are just not at the pinnacle of research any more. From my point of view the development has mainly been in production cost and ease of use for not so well informed users. The Ergaval was a basic q...

may be a bit shorter texts combined with a more fluid movement of the stage will do the job.

Hi Konrad,
what apertures do the objectives have and what type of condenser are you using?
For high n.a. dark field you need a special oil immersion cardioid dark field condenser and it has to fit the thickness of the slide.

You might make a slide from fixated and stained bacteria and show it at high magnification. The light microscope won't show more than the shape though. I once had a look at slides from human bacterial diseases and can remember that the different bacteria arranged themselved in very different ways. Bob
