Re: Guessing this is Mastigamoeba cf setosa ?
Another great catch + very nice video, though perhaps a little dark You will need a better input than mine, but I wonder if Mastigamoeba setosa might be a better fit than Mastigamoeba cf setosa given the description: "nucleus with some peripheral nucleolar fragments, sometimes with lacunae; cilium ...

Re: Guessing this is Mastigamoeba cf setosa ?
Thanks Bob, good tip on the aperture.MicroBob wrote:Great video, especially from second 40 on!
At the beginning of the video I think the aperture may have been closed a bit much.
I can't help with the identification tough. As amoeba change their shape continuously it probably is a difficult task.

Guessing this is Mastigamoeba cf setosa ?
I've been through all (I think) of the amoeba examples on the Microworld amoeba site and this one is the closest match I have to this amoeba: example : https://www.arcella.nl/mastigamoeba-cf-setosa/ my video: https://vimeo.com/353171007 This creature has cilia and a flagella, but I'm not confident t...

Re: Mastigamoeba Aspera video in DIC
Thank you everyone ! I found another different type amoeba in the same sample that has cilia and flagellum but I'm going attempt to ID on my own (at first) before I post the video.

Re: Help with two idents
The first one is definitely a ciliate. It's not a Paramecium , which have a prominent oral groove, but I'm not sure I can make out a mouth well enough to guess what it is instead. Note that while it might be less natural looking, often brightfield gives you better detail for recognizing them. The s...

Mastigamoeba Aspera video in DIC
This creature has been fascinating me for a few days. I took a small sample from the bottom of a "less than fresh" freshwater pond and have seen this in several of the slides I've looked at. Taken with a BHS BH2 scope, Nikon Z6 (FX format), 2.5x photo eyepiece, DIC. The first half of the video is wi...

Just wanted to say great catch on the second 'creature' https://www.arcella.nl/genus-mastigamoeba/ Mastigamoeba aspera looks like a possible candidate Thank you ! I have a vial of material from the bottom of a pond and I've seen that amoeba frequently. Its very fascinating and I have quite a bit of...

The first one must be a paramecium and the second some kind of amoeba ? This couldn't be Balamuthia could it ?

I'm new at this and am struggling with trying to ID things I'm seeing. Could someone ID the two creatures in this short video. Re: My new Olympus BHS BH2
Hi Dan, you've got yourself a very nice setup there and the results look very promising! Your approach with the well slides makes it more difficult for you but at the same time you obain a more natural view of the specimens with makes it worth the effort. Most "great" plancton images are made in th...

First, I'd suggest you peruse this site: http://www.krebsmicro.com/ Charlie Krebs is the BHS-DIC Photomicrography Guru. Pretty much all of your questions are answered there. The projection eyepieces are designed to stay away from the outer edges of the field where image quality can be a bit less. T...

Re: My new Olympus BHS BH2
Looks like a great setup. Can't see in the picture -- I assume you have the BH2 DIC condenser as well? Are those SPlans on the scope? As for the 1.67x - might try imaging with less powerful objectives to capture the on-screen magnification you want?? If there isn't a 20x Splan on the turret, that m...

I have located a couple of Olympus BH2/BHS and Nikon Optiphot 2 scopes but before I buy I would really appreciate anyones thoughts on whether I might be better served with an inverted microscope ? . . .. Is there one standard BH2/BHS ? The BH-2 is a series name (following the BH microscopes from Olympus). At the time, this series had the highest market share among professionals. There were many Stentors and a few other organisms. After observing these for an afternoon, I became disturbed at the possible harm...
