Re: unknown microorganisms
Thanks for the ID and the link. There a few of those in some permanent slides I made of the surface film of a hay infusion. That's got me thinking... I have a big rotten pile of hay in the back yard, where would be the best place to take a sample and how would I prepare it? Should I for example tak...

Re: Microhabitat upgrade
2x is overkill - well into empty magnification territory. It rarely provides a better image, not sure quite why it was included. Will have to check at some point if the Optovar has an effect. By which I meant I will have to check that the 1x is indeed 1x Here is a link to a pdf on the Optovar: http...

Re: Drop in darkfield for the filter ring
Should work fine... You may need to vertically adjust the condenser a little to fine tune the darkfield stops. Make sure your filter holder accepts 32mm filters yes it's 32mm at the top, 30 at the bottom, I checked it with the digital vernier. You might first try with a homemade one... Not all cond...

Re: Microhabitat upgrade
Will have to check at some point if the Optovar has an effect. I imagine it would, it would be just like using an objective of higher power would it not? I have a similar system in the optical train on my IMT-2, it has a factor of 1.5x Is that how people achieve magnifications of 2000x, with system...

Here is a link that describes it well: http://microscope-microscope.org/advanced/reticles.htm Thanks 75. Re: Microhabitat upgrade
to provide 'accurate linear measurement' your eyepiece scale now needs to be calibrated, for each of your objectives, against a known reference. That's right, but it never hurts to state the obvious Michael. Fortunately I have a calibration slide that I used to fix the fov of my 10x and 40x objecti...

Has anyone had any experience with these? The go in my filter ring below the condenser. Re: My silly quest for : 'poor mans DIC'.
Well beyond me, I'm just a black box operator at this stage but keep us posted on what comes out of the EP. I found a DIC kit for my olympus imt-2 going for a grand and a half (they are generally 6 grand) but it was an Indonesian company that accepts only wire transfers or cash, no CC or paypal so I...

Re: Microhabitat upgrade
Maybe it is not parfocal with your other eyepieces. This could be corrected by lifting one of the eyepieces with the correction helix. It arrived today and looks new. The top lens is wider than mine, the image brighter, but it's a perfect fit and parfocal with mine. Even sits at the same height rel...

Re: Objective has defect
Make sure to check any doublets near the bottom very carefully for oil invasion.... There are none, it's an old scope and all lenses thankfully are single elements. I have done dozens of these and it is amazing how much dirt or film can cling to those lenses, quite unperceived by good eyesight or e...

This one is about 80u long, swam in a circle and whenever it brushed another, even much smaller protist, it recoiled very smartly. I looked in my resources and bing images but I'm stumped. The closest I came to something similar was Epenardia Here is what I have https://s6.postimg.org/6rg2v4v35/UNKN...

Welcome desert rat, I am down in Australia, in the capital of Brisbane surrounded by lights of all kinds but the moon and the planets are best observed under such conditions, because of the better contrast. Though I must admit, looking through a microscope is a lot easier, especially as one ages.

Thanks for all the input guys, I decided to strip it down and as it turned out it was immersion oil caught between the bottom 2 elements. I cleaned them up with isopropyl alcohol and the empty objective barrel with petrol then isopropyl. I assembled it all by the numbers (But I think) the second bot...

I think if I pitch it to the wife as a "water feature" for the front yard butterfly garden I might have a chance. ;) CE She'll see straight through that. Say your going to breed gold fish as a passive income stream :) You have motivated me to go out and search for some more weed for my little tank....

You would have to try how well the chinese eyepiece fit to your objectives optically. On rethinking I decided chinese made was not for me, I don't have any faith in their gear. I bought this instead, it was local and cheaper. Will get delivered in a week https://s6.postimg.org/kyhvkclup/image.jpg h...
