Re: Citric Acid - illumination experiment
Cool image. If memory serves, you also have DIC - maybe on your BX40?? If so, how would you compare the images - if you use the DIC prism to force some color as well? I wish. The BX40 is Phase Contrast. This Hoffman Modulation Contrast scope fell on me from the sky. (Unexpected great trade) DIC is ...

Citric Acid - illumination experiment
HMC is designed to cancel out birefringence enabling observation through plastic petri dishes. Adding another polarizer as an analyzer forces the birefringence resulting a nice colorful image. Olympus IX70 10x HMC + POL Citric acid water solution air dried d.m. https://i.postimg.cc/6QxZxvrG/PS-2019-...

Re: Fire Ant
Just thinking out loud, but has anyone tried setting the subject in front of a backlit sheet of polarized material, and put a polarized filter on the camera? I know this is probably how they do the stress in plexiglass photography. Not sure how this might work with a live subject. Bwahahahaha more e...

Hello Einman. I purchased the slide, along with a slide of a queen. I don’t know what medium was used. Photo was shot on my Olympus SZ40 stereo scope. Analyzer is a camera filter that is attached to the ring light coller, and the slide sits on a small polarazed holder I made that I can slide around o...

Re: Crystal Mania
Thanks, Rob,
I like to grow my crystals on cover slips as well.
Tried heating them, but I invariably burn them.
Also tried in a vacuum, but got almost no reaction in 24 hours.
Crystallography is one of my favorite aspects of our wonderful hobby. I need to do more.

Hi, Rob,
I’m curious whether you see better crystal growth with a quickly or a slowly evaporating medium?

Re: Inverted VS. Compound microscopes
I have to agree with all of the above mentioned advantages with an inverted.
Mine was one of those surprise offers I couldn’t refuse, and I’d never considered one before that.
The only thing I would not try with one is oil immersion. I use the upright microscope for that exclusively.

Re: Product advise
Hi, Tronn, You can explore many facets of microscopy with a filter tray. It gives you access to lots of interesting experiments. A darkfield stop or various oblique stops give you some wonderful different views of the micro world. Adapting any microscope for polarized illumination is simple and very...

Re: uploaded images gone after a few days
I use photoimage.org to store these photos. Recently they changed the suffix to photoimage.cc
My old posts that just show ‘image’ where the photo was had to be edited to change .org to .cc in order to work correctly.
Got most of mine fixed now, but it was a chore.

Re: Eye floaters
I have quite a few in both eyes. Sometimes i have to shake my head to rearrange them when I’m observing. When I’m doing photography, I’m looking at a laptop screen when framing and focusing and they’re not as noticeable. Working on cataracts as well, but they are not bad enough for Medicare to pay f...

I’m baffled. This works for me on my laptop, on my iPad, and even on the 60” TV.
No more crossing of my eyes than it takes to make a tiled floor float.
Oh well,

I guess that would make Spencer microscopes difficult to date.
They even overlapped the logos for a while after AO aquired Spencer, didn’t they?
