Fossils hey? I never would have guessed. I had a white one when I was young, a necklace thing but the black ones do have appeal.

Re: another marine beastie aka Sea Dragon

About 750µm, which would make it a mini Sea Dragon Actually did a google search on Sea Dragons - turns out someone used the name for a cousin of the Sea Horse so I really should come up with another provisional one. Interesting find. I searched bing images under a variety of term and found nothing ...

At 1000um it would seem possible that you could "curl" it up yourself, like with a fine needle say. Have you ever manipulated a subject thus 75?

I wonder what purpose those forked stalks at the top of the first image perform. Nothing on these creatures is an ornament, everything has a function I believe.

Nice captures 75, so much detail I have to keep reminding myself they are microscopic organisms and not larger subjects. I look forward to the day I buy the dedicated camera for my scope.

What's a good source for blank slides and coverslips? Ebay, as always I think. I bought some made in the USA ones down here in Australia from a local supplier. Re: OLYMPUS BX40

I am new to this hobby. Please, could any one tell me if buying a used OLYMPUS BX40 is a good choice to start? I suppose it's all relative to your income. Someone who drives a Maserati would probably not be content with anything less as a starter scope in my opinion. My income is ok, but I spent $2...

Welcome Adolfo, it's certainly a fascinating hobby. Using sunlight as a light source, if it can be arranged, would be the best illumination too I believe. The most natural for the eyes so to speak.

I would also be interested in seeing some of your work with your inverted stand... The Best, BillT I got the 4x, it's very useful, and have begun using the IMT as my main scope now I have a full set of objectives. It is quite a step up from the old ECE and the phase contrast is remarkable in showin...

Re: newbie looking for first microscope

In terms of your desire for a digital microscope, I'd suggest buying a used top quality lab microscope from the 70's - 90's and then add a digital camera to it. I concur Paul, if you have an eye for quality engineering and precision controls you can't go past the older ones IMO. Dollar for dollar w...

Re: Does anyone use a 4x objective?

Make sure you have the nosepiece opening covered in the meantime. I have caps on all the empty sockets if that's what you mean I never use the 4x on my more basic Olympus ECE model because when I open the field diaphragm to maximum to allow a fully illuminated fov, said view becomes degraded for so...

Beginners Interactive guide to relative microscopic size variations

I found this quite useful in giving me a general sense of scale for what I was looking at under the microscope. Just move the slider under the picture to zoom in to greater and greater magnifications.

Looks like one of those aliens out of the tom cruise movie, Edge Of Tomorrow. Spooky.

Can you put a leaf off the plant under the scope? They grow on the leaves I read.

Thanks all. The 4xpl was the only obj missing on my IMT-2 nosepiece and when I saw one come up in good condition at a reasonable price I wanted to buy it but just needed that little bit of confirmation. I never use the 4x on my more basic Olympus ECE model because when I open the field diaphragm to ...

Does anyone use a 4x objective?

I was wondering if these are used regularly by any posters here, and if so to what purpose. I have read they are for scanning, getting a general overview, but are there specific subjects viewed with a light microscope for which this is a good choice of objective, assuming 10x eye-pieces.

Dead-right my friend. We all have to start at the beginning. You'll find your technique will improve very quickly indeed - remember to keep the sample and the blade wet and 'slice' rather than chop if you can. You'll be amazed what can be achieved with basic hand-sectioning! Good luck, let us know ...

Re: Marine Copepod Exoskeleton

Seemed quite complete - thought it would allow some detailed viewing. That it does. Do you think it died of old age etc, or was this the result of growth, like when a snake sheds it's skin? If the former it would be good to see a time lapse of the internals being eaten out by smaller organisms. Tha...
