Re: Is it safe to buy Used Microscopes and parts

I've bought hundreds of used microscopes and slides...even slides of pathogens. I must be lucky I'm still alive and well.

You can rule out the binocular head by rotating it and see if the spot moves. What is that slide just below the head in front?

I just let them soak in a warm dishwashing soap and water for a few minutes, then clean with a cleaning cloth and then rinse in hot water and as they are drip drying, dry with a lint free cloth.

I would think D is for DIN and RD is for Retractable DIN. Retractable in that the tip will retract into the barrel when the tip touches the slide.

That's not really too bad shape once you clean it up and blacken the edges. I do believe that is a darkfield stop in there too.

Yes, you are missing the bearing which goes on that spring. Perhaps it fell out as you were disassembling it.

This stain uses crystal violet - which creates cancer. In my view one should have some experience in preparation before using stain of this level. It is too easy to stain ones thumb! It is a little blown-out on the bottom left edge, due I think to the camera not being perfectly parallel.
Or it maybe the mounted diatom maybe askew a bit? either way, shouldn't stacking bring everything into proper focus?

Re: Interesting Attachment......ID???

This is a Leitz mechanical slide holder which goes on a rotating stage for polarizing light microscopy. The bare 'knobs' are fitted with different click stops used in the identification of minerals. The bracket hits the grooves in the different click stops making a click sound as you move the slide ...

Update, in this Facebook thread https://www.facebook.com/100000714246755/videos/3788702834496821/ there is one way to go about it with the BA 310E, I guess it may work with other microscopes as well. If my memory serves me right, I think he uses darkfield with tissue paper to get a DIC effect. Edit...

Re: Achieving oblique illumination with motic ba310e

It should be easy if there is a filter holder. Make an opaque filter (black) and start sliding it into the filer holder until you get the desired effect in your eyepiece. You can see some design changes you can make for different effects here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/31-MM-Dark-Field-Oblique-Micros...

Look for Unitron MPS. With a set of quick mount objectives, they usually run from $100-200. They look like these. The black one is the Unitron MPS and the white one is a Bristol which probably were made by the same company and rebranded.

The reason thin sections cost so much is because of the labor involved in making one. I think the recommended thickness is 0.03mm for a proper thin sections. Here is nice go by. https://davehirsch.com/other/thinsections/

Re: Mineralogy, Metallurgy

There have been posts of chemicals in polarized light and circuit boards, but I think the main reason you don't see as many would be that the equipment required for mineralogy/metallurgy would be 10x the cost of a basic biological microscope. For proper mineralogy/metallurgy, you will need an analyz...

There was a brownish/dark red adhesive on the sides, so maybe shellac plus some translucent stuff in the threads. 1. These screws were designed to be loosened slightly for proper alignment of the prism in the slider (with standard scope - your pol at east-west, analyzer at north-south, the prism sh...

Most spring objects are designed for the use of a drop of oil on the slide.
Just a cautious note: There are 40/45X objective which also have spring loaded tips and should not be used with oil if they are not designated as oil immersion.

Noticed that in my nosepiece, the indexer has indents and the click-stop has an extra bearing. So 60+12+1 bearing balls. You need to put grease to hold this bearing in place during re-asssembly. I am not sure that the indexer, that small piece of metal shown on your second photo, is missing a ball ...

Re: zeisz std pol set up..where are your pol filter located

In any pol setup you need one above the specimen and one below the specimen. In a Zeiss 160TL setup, there is a rotating polarizer below the condenser and a slide in or rotating analyzer between the head and objective turret.
