This image is actually composed of a stack (of 8 photos), but has some nasty artefacts. This is a huge crop of the whole photograph - which in itself was taken with a X40 objective, projection lens X1.23, and optovar set to maximum. Any guidance most welcome, thank you. . This tutorial video, by Motic Europe, may help [although it demonstrates the MS Windows version] https://youtu.be/Hoev1BO_ZSg It would appear that your Swift has a smaller field of view than Motic expects ... making the 70 micron dot unusable; but you should have no problem with the linear scale. Assuming that it’s the rack in your photo ... it is flexibly sprung by those slots, so alignment should not be a significant problem.

I would certainly dismount it.

I would suggest thoroughly cleaning the rack before you consider replacing it.

Re: Tripod exanding and contracting with 3°C temp swings when shooting timelapses at 5x?

Controlling air temperature to within 0.1C is extremely demanding. Quality thermostatted ovens might reach that using a fan and thick insulated walls. . I must disagree ... Insulating materials, and control electronics, have improved greatly over recent years, and the ‘Cave’ is already stable to wi...

Re: Tripod exanding and contracting with 3°C temp swings when shooting timelapses at 5x?

I think temperature stabilisation would be by far the most effective approach. ... Trying to fix the problem by clever use of materials is a nice idea, but will probably set you on the road to madness. At a rough guess : you need control of air temperature to about +/- 0.1°C and the equipment stabil...
