A large grass pollen grain from the same slide (> 80 microns, may be corn pollen):

A conifer pollen grain from an air sample (downtown Bellevue, WA, USA, May 2017).
Stained with iodine, mounted in CytoSeal, 100x objective, oblique illumination.

Agree that it's probably plant fibers.
I sometimes see things exactly like this on my cotton blue slides, and they don't get stained - so almost certainly not fungi.

For 100x oil photos, could it be that you close the condenser a little bit too much?

Any experience with Hoffman modulation contrast? How it compares to more popular DIC techniques?
Is it available for objectives greater than 40x? (I can't find any)

Do you use a stereo microscope also for this, or only the biological one? It should be hard to manipulate looking in the biological one because of mirrored image, no?
