Re: Willow (?) pollen 100x
I am not sure what kind of tree it is, but I am almost sure it is not a willow.. My photo is from a yet leafless tree. Also by "some willow" I mean "probably pussy willow". There are pussy willow photos on the net that looks quite similar to mine, like https://i0.wp.com/www.2knowandvote.com/wp-cont...

Thanks for the nice words!
Any help with ID? Can you even see the tree branch photo (the third one in the first post)? I sometimes can see it, sometimes can't.

Something like that in gimp:KurtM wrote:Can you expound upon how you achieved the pseudo-SEM look?

If by "PS" you mean Adobe Photoshop, I'd like to let you know that, except for Zerene Stacker, I use only free/open source programs for photography: Darktable, Gimp, and ImageJ.billbillt wrote:I also love the psuedo-SEM look... If PS was not so expensive, I would have it.

Pollen, stained with Lugol's iodine vapors and mounted in CytoSeal. 100x objective, oblique bright field, ~20 photos in the focus stack: https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2864/33867690715_e6e58073dc_b.jpg Post-processing attempt to make it look like SEM (could have worked better with non-oblique bright ...

Re: What would be the best quality prepared slide kits available?
I've just received some Leider slides - it's one of the companies that were recommended in this thread. The set I've bought is one the Leider's "Sets of economic slides sets MICR-O-SLIDE": 59-5240 Fungi, mushrooms and algae under the microscope (Cryptogams part I). I'm really disappointed with the q...

Re: Tardigrade SEM photo
Also, many sources claims (probably copy from each other) how robust and resilient tardigrades are, specifically that they can withstand huge pressure. I'm yet to find a tardigrade to look under a microscope, but I suspect if the water evaporates, pure creature will be easily crushed by the cover gl...

Re: Tardigrade SEM photo
I agree the image looks very suspicious. They don't claim it's alive, though. Also, pixel dimensions are suspiciously large: on http://images.sciencesource.com/preview/14006150/BS8236.html, it says the width is 13.7" at 300dpi, so it's 4110 pixels. I'm not sure there are SEMs with such pixel resolut...

Dacrymyces palmatus (orange jelly fungus)
Spores of this fungus are relatively large - more than 20 microns in length - and have some interesting internal structure. From the Wiki: "Magnetotactic bacteria (or MTB) are a polyphyletic group of bacteria discovered by Richard P...

I see a: 170 tube length,10X/no coverslip objective on the turrent...with it's NA below 0.4..does it matter with the coverslip on slides viewed? I see the the markings are "170/-", which means that coverslip thickness is not critical (can be used with or without coverslip). "No coverslip" would be ...
