Rubber Plant Leaf Cells

The common rubber plant has a special place with me because of its special texture and because of the look of its cells. The cells are large, fluid-filled, mostly odd-shaped with layers of cell membranes. The cells have swaths of colored organelles, possibly cell nuclei Not knowing what I'm seeing i...

Life Starting Small

For the previous month or so I was seeing more and more rotifers. Then I adjusted my collection methods and focus increasingly fell on very small protists, many of whom looked more primitive. I also started noticing the bacteria in the sample. This collection is typical.

Elementary Life--New protists developing in the mudpuddle

Small protists represent a new generation of microscopic life in the mudpuddle.

Final Drying of a Lawn Flower

A floral complex in the back yard undergoes natural decomposition which takes the form of drying. Older floral structures dry out and younger ones remain flexible. The dried floral structures appear to crystalize in the corners becoming angular. The view covers the range between 20x and 1000x or so....

Very Small Newcomers

The presence of bacteria and very small organisms is now too evident to ignore. Bacteria and minimally visible life forms are seeable only with the high-power objective. I've been watching for more than one session and these life forms are now getting more common in the sample. Eventually they will ...

Mudpuddle Rescue from the Very Small

Microscopic life in my mudpuddle is entering a new phase. The dominant organisms have been the rotifers almost to the exclusion of everything else. However, a new generation of very small organisms is beginning to emerge. These are flagellates, barely visible under high magnification. New generation...

Rubber Tree Leaves Up Close

I cut very thin and small pieces of a rubber tree leaf. The cells of this kind of plant have always been of great interest. It makes a lovely little adventure.

Re: Moving Mudpuddle

Try dipping in the water sample a very short watercolor brush and then touching the brush to the slide, making a small puddle.

Moving Mudpuddle

I started using a paintbrush to collect microbe samples. Up unil now I have been using a pipette which misses a lot of organisms. This last collection contains the usual rotifers and some protists from various groups. I think the paintbrush is an excellent collection device--beating out the pipette ...

Leaf Cells Under Attack by Hungry Animals

These are not great images but I thought the situation was worth looking at. A vegetable structure was going through rapid consumption by a group of micro-animals. The images of the vegetable cells are very clear but the rotifers attacking them not so much.

What's Left of a Completely Dried Out Leaf

The leaf was completely dried out (it cleanly broke when I tried to bend it). However, cell structure was still visibly intact.

Re: A Grasp of the Mudpuddle

Some good video there. It's interesting to see this with the ultra high contrast, very different from a less contrasted view. It seems to thicken the edges somewhat to show more structure but probably causes a compromise by limiting visibility of some of the inner workings of the digestive system, ...

A Grasp of the Mudpuddle

The mudpuddle is only slowly developing some diversity. I did manage to get some pretty good images of the rotifers and some protists growing in the culture. I tried to increase the contrast and adjust the dynamic range of the pictures to improve them.

DeGreened Leaf

One of the broad-leafed grasses on the lawn developed bare patches that spread to encompass half of the surface of the leaf in spots. It looks like the chlorophyll content of the leaf was absorbed of eliminated. What are the differences between the green and the un-greened sections of the leaves? Th...

Mudpuddle in Recession

Because it's Winter here in Winnipeg it's impossible to go outside and collect fresh specimens of living creatures in the mudpuddles. I still have samples from my original mudpuddles but the range of life in them gets less and less diverse. I think the ciliates are being eliminated by the colony of ...
