Thanks!
Yes, the timer is set for a 16 hour photo-period in hopes of producing exactly this reaction.
Sure, go ahead and post a couple of your frames for comparison.

Heamatococcus in my culture bottle

If you saw my earlier photos of my algae cultures, you might remember that they were all various shades of green (except for the brown one on the left). I noticed over the last few days that the one that I inoculated with Heamatococcus (hopefully) from the birdbath was turning yellow / orange. Today...

You just have to love the rotifers.
I see the faint concentric rings in the background of photos 1 and 2 as Seb mentioned, I have have seen that effect before in my own photos. We had a long discussion about it on the old forum.
I like your photos, keep it up.

Re: What am I looking at (blood sample)?

Yes,

A) RBC's or Red Blood Cells
B is a crenated red blood cell, already explained quite well
C are white blood cells
D is probably smashed blood cells
E could be many things, though they might well be platelets
F debris or contamination
G looks like more debris on the slide, somewhat out of focus.

Re: My first algae culture experiment

Thanks Gekko. Thanks for your concern, but there really isn't anything to worry about. The lamp is no more at risk than a lamp in a fixture above an aquarium. In this case, it is separated from the water by the thick glass of the wine bottles rather than the flimsy plastic of the aquarium lamp fixtu...

The bottom shelf on my plant rack doesn't get all that much light, so I added a 100w equivalent CFL on it's own timer. We'll see if it's enough.

Re: My first algae culture experiment

Quite possibly. I think it might take a lot of effort to isolate a pure culture from a wild source, but it should be do-able given time and determination. Of course I am just testing method here to see what will grow, mainly for entertainment. There are sources online that sell pure cultures of just...

Re: My first algae culture experiment

Searching online for information on culturing algae results mostly in growing algae for making biodiesel, and spirulina for nutritional supplementation. Interesting subjects, but not really what I was looking for. Then I found the key: instead search for "culturing phytoplankton". This turns up tons...

Re: My first algae culture experiment

I removed the air stones and attached a pipette to each tube instead... that allows me to still get the end down near the bottom of the bottle and still produces fairly large bubbles instead of the maelstrom produced by the stones. Also plugged the air pump into a timer and set it to run for an hour...

Re: My first algae culture experiment

The thing that irks me is that about a month ago I bleached all my water storage bottles that I use for my carnivorous plants, because they were getting... algae buildup.

My first algae culture experiment

rsz_1rsz_10269334_1015921605102957_1039786044486606128_o.jpg This is my first attempt to culture some algae. The left bottle is from a pond that I have been sampling since high school biology, 30 some odd years ago. I intentionally avoided collecting any visible clumps of algae. The bottle on the r...

Re: Culturing Algae

I think I just found a use for a few empty wine bottles.
Do you use an air stone, or just open ended tubes for aeration? Do you let it bubble vigorously, or turn it down to a slow dribble of bubbles?

I had wondered about your lens assembly, thanks for that information. I am really not too concerned about video these days myself, but once in a while something interesting pops up and I like to take a few seconds of vid to review later. That would be a whole lot easier with a tricoc assembly, but t...

Re: New project: LED conversion for LOMO Biolam

Probably so Tony, though your "transformer" is actually an electronic switching power supply instead of a plain old transformer with diodes and big filter capacitors, that's why it is so small. Since it is a switcher, even though the output is dc there is still the possibility of noise in the output...

Gekko, I remember that from previous discussions on the old forum, I had assumed that you had solved it. I should have a couple of suitable regulators in my junk box, I'll take a look when I get home. If I don't find any I can order a couple to play with.

Re: New project: LED conversion for LOMO Biolam

Most modern LED driver modules / circuits use some form of Pulse Width Modulation scheme to achieve high efficiency, that is, good brightness control with the least wasted power. Unfortunately, this can result in annoying interference patterns in recorded videos resulting from the PWM beating agains...

I have often thought of doing that Tony, as I dislike that fine focus wheel arrangement intensely.
By the way, I had to look up "Heath Robinson", though I inferred your meaning from the context. Looks like he was a very creative fellow.

Re: New project: LED conversion for LOMO Biolam

Of course there was no documentation whatsoever, but as they are the same boards used in the tutorial on the old for...
