Re: Alboran Sea Diatoms

I tried to make a test permanent side from this sample. I wanted to make a test slide because diatoms react different ways depending on their shape and side. I was trying to see if they would shift during the mounting process. I figured the most likely ones which would shift are the large ones like ...

Re: Buying expired slides - hit or miss

This made me look at my slides. I usually buy them in large lots, when they are sold at a great savings, and have various manufacturers...Leica, Fisher Scientific, Globe Scientific and none have expiration dates. They do have catalog and lot numbers and date manufactured, but none with expiration da...

Re: Suggestions for Work Surface

Hello All: I'm trying to find something for a work surface best for mounting and manipulating specimens. I am thinking about the hard plastic cutting boards which are washable, could be cut on with a scalpel, etc. This moveable work surface item I would put on my lab table as my lab table's surface...

For a simple fix, you could seal the edges with varnish or fingernail polish. That way, you wouldn't need the tape.

Have you tried Cosmos Biomedical in England? They have their own product and it might be lass expensive than a known brand. Seems like a good product. Thanks for the Cosmos Biomedical tip, but shopping in England (now that is no longer part of the EU) has got more complicated. I am assuming there i...

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope DIC Inko questions.

What is required beside your #2 DIC slide and DIC condenser is the polarizer and analyzer to obtain cross polars first. The #2 DIC slide has the analyzer and you would need a polarizer under the condenser. The equipment should work even with the IIIRS fluoro unit as long as you're not going through ...

Jealous of your international sample! So many interesting and different species in there, and nicely showcased on the slide! Fantastic diversity.
From which depth (in the mud, and below the water) was the sand collected ?
It is great that you do not boil in acid any more.
I still acid treat, but just let the sample set in it and not boiled. See the edit above.

I put the samples in a jar of water, swirl vigorously by hand and decant immediately to a second jar. I add more water to the sample jar again repeat until the swirled water is clear. Alboran Sea Diatoms

75RR (Glen) sent me some seaweed and sand samples from the shores of Southern Spain in the Mediterranean, around the Alboran sea. Here are some pictures of the sample after cleaning and sorting through about 50 strew slides to a keeper slide. Taken through a B&L SZ7 and Canon EOS: Left half of diato...

Samples off of rocks two feet under maybe too deep. Look for rocks near the surface which are slimy to the touch. Once you scrub the rocks, let the water settle and put a drop of the concentrate under a microscope to see if there are any diatoms. Drano's main ingredients are basis (sodium hypochlora...

I don't believe plastic can get into the flesh of fish or other animals and show up as filaments. They would need to be digested at a molecular level and you would never see strands of plastic in the flesh. Most likely it may have been in the stomach or other contaminants while processing.

I have the GFL manual as well as the DIC instructions for your type of DIC. Send me a PM with your email. If you are in the US, I probably have a spare phase annuli. Which phase annuli is it, Ph2 or Ph3 Your lighting is a 12V 60W system, so you will need a 12V power transformer. The extra fitting in...

On the focus knobs/shaft. The right side, once you unscrew the coarse focus knob has 6 alignment "leaves" (maybe more) which needs to be aligned a certain way in order for the full focus travel to be correct length. Make note of how they are arranged after taking the plastic knob off, so they can be...

There are different turret attachment systems depending on how old your Universal tube head is.
