Please don't be offended, but they look kind of other-world science fiction like with that illumination. Maybe like the brains of some alien life forms. Amazing photos! Under ordinary bright field they would look kind of plain by comparison. Ha, ha, no not offended! Yes, a friend of mine called the...

Cosmarium
I just got a new darkfield (oil) condenser for my scope which I have been playing around with. Also, bought a retarder (wedge plate) which generates a lot of nice colors! This subject is Cosmarium, a desmid. 40X, Darkfield: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/895/40380380735_aa4d0ba086_b.jpg Cosmarium by...

Excitation filter: 440-440 nm Dichroic mirror: 455 nm Emission: 475 nm The 440 is quite inside the excitation range for chlorophylls and pheophytins, but other molecules will also be excited.. The dichroic mirror and emission filters are also not specific for chlorophylls, but allow you to observe ...

Great catch + great images Have not seen one for ages Have you thought about using the 40x and combining the partial images via stitching? Note: stitching software requires a large image overlap Thank 75RR. I have several stitches shot, but I have not had the time to post process them yet. Also, I ...

Re: Micrasterias
@hkv Very nice and impressive work. I wonder which wavelength you used to excite the red fluorescence, and which setup (lamp, filter cubes etc). Are these on the Olympus BX51? I am asking since there are several possible wavelengths, and several chlorophyll and related molecules. Yes, Olympus BX51....

Micrasterias
Lucky to have found Micrasterias in my samples, which are very beautiful (and big). Could not fit the entire subject with the 40X, so the full body shots are taken with a 20X objective. I just acquired a new oil darkfield condenser so this is the first image with the new toy. 20X, Polarized light: h...

Agree on the bug definition. A bug is anything small with moving legs or wings, hence highly likely to attack you. All you want to do is to smack it with a shoe. That's a bug. Here is a water mite I shot and the second one shows the mouth parts. Kind of creepy bugs these mites. https://farm5.staticf...

Thank you for the description of your method! I was so interested about it because it is a long term project of mine to get into photographing moving objects. Your description gave me several new insights about what to do and what to avoid. When you start with a vintage Zeiss Jena NF or Zeiss GFL w...

Re: Euglena, Algae, Diatom and Cyano
Freezing the action is simple with flash. But stacking plankton would need a very stationary object or a very fast camera. My Nikon 1j5 can take 20 images in 0,33 seconds. It would also be possible to extract the images from a film. But how does hkv do it? Håkan, show us some of your wizardry! WOW....

Euglena, Algae, Diatom and Cyano
Hello my friends, thought I would share these recent shots I have been stacking. The diatom is marine and was collected during my vacation in Islamorada, Florida. Out of a full bottle of sea water, this was all I managed to find. At least he was alive, but somewhat a disappointment that I could not ...

Very nice results and interesting! I am pleased to see the old art of "hand stacking" being used once in a while. I used the same technique on the arcella.
