Re: Broken Volvox

Really nice pic, hkv! What would be the Volvox? All of it. ;) The outer sphere is made up of little flagellates, somewhat resembling Chlamydomonas . The circles of darker green are daughter colonies. Yes, the white mesh you see in the background was once the sphere. I must have crushed it with the ...

I believe this once was a beautiful Volvox. Still worthy of a shot I think.

Re: Rotifer Keratella juggling two Desmids

This is a very interesting thread! Very good advice and different views. What I realize is that the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. JimT, your image is beautiful in certain way and almost turned into a drawing or cartoon. Nice effect! A little bit over-cooked and close to a phase contrast imag...

Re: Rotifer Keratella juggling two Desmids

Thanks! I think the BW image was nice! I will try from the master TIFF and do the same to ensure the resolution and quality. I cannot see much difference in contrast to be honest... Maybe it is my eyes 8-)

Re: Rotifer Keratella juggling two Desmids

HKV, I have some suggestions but your second image is a JPEG when I try to down load it. Am I missing something? JimT What I meant by raw is that it was "untouched". If you want to play around with it, use this TIFF of 2048 pixels at 14 MB. The camera spits out JPG and .CR2. The native .CR2 are 25 ...

Re: Rotifer Keratella juggling two Desmids

Was playing about with your image in Photoshop ... I think you will find there is still some room for a little more sharpening. Give it a try. I am still learning Photoshop. What options did you try? I tried "sharpening", but I think to contrast gets too sharp. I tried increase "contrast" but it lo...

Rotifer Keratella juggling two Desmids

I found this Keratella sniffing on a Desmids. I was waiting for him to swallow it, but it just juggled around in front of his mouth. In this picture, I believe we are watching him with the belly side up. Actually the appearance of two Desmids in front of his "wheel" was a single desmid. However it m...

Re: Copepod (top view) - glass look

Thank you billbillt, 75RR, KurtM and JimT. No, he was unfortunately not pinned down by the cover glass. He was quite active and swimming around. After a while he got tired or at least sat still for longer period of times so I managed to shoot a stack. However, he moved some of his antennas and hairs...

This is the same Copepod that I previously showed in side view. This stack shows him from the top, belly down. Stack of 13.

Re: Copepod

I reworked the image from the TIFF-files and cleaned up the background and some edges in Lightroom. I do not think it ended up any better. Each TIFF is 100 MB and the JPGs are like 4 MB. In theory it should be better.... but theory is theory. Still I think the first one looks equally good or even be...

Pictures would help. Usually there are plastic or wooden blocks on which you mount the wax. Then you clamp the block to the microtome. At least that is how mine works.

The safest way to clean diatoms is to call Klaus Kemp and ask for a ready made mount. Not as fun though as DIY. (joking of course)

Thank you all for you kind comments. I think I have at least 10 stacks which are useless since he moved too much. Re: Messing about with Photoshop

Thanks, great images! It is amazing how much information the camera sensor really registers. Most hidden in the data and magically bought back by tweaking it in photoshop. It is very powerful to be able to bring forward details and hide others to help the eye and the brain to interpret what the came...

Copepod - reworked

I did this one from a stack of 27. UplanSAPO 20X. DIC. Unfortunately he was moving a bit through the stack so parts of it shows motion blur and artifacts from the stacking process. Will try to redo it some day, but thought I'll share it anyway. These are made from the JPEGS and not the TIFs which co...
