Re: Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
Hi Håkan, really great images! Every time I see how beautiful and detailed nature is it becomes more and more difficult to understand how badly we treat it. It's nice of you to decribe the amount of work and capability that was neede to make these images. So we are not disappointed when we can't ge...

Re: Wetland Cillates
Thanks Bob, What you say has just made me think. So does a larger drop of water create a larger space between the slide and the coverslip? Within reason. :) Yes, for sure. Large drop, large gap. The surface tension of the water lifts the glass sort of. I use Microbobs method as well. Add water with...

Re: Diatoms
Your DIC images are great again! Where in Sweden do you live? I was twice paddling in vintage folding kayaks in the area south on Västervik with my family. It was very impressiv to move between these many small uninhabited islands and then stay the night in tiny tents on one of them. I live in Stoc...

Re: Diatoms
Fascinating! Is the red photo - fluorescence ? the same diatoms as in the first DIC photo? Yes, fluorescent light. The red is the chlorophyll auto-fluorescing. Not very exciting as an image as such, but it clearly revealed 4 strings of chloroplasts in each diatom in the colony. If you look at the D...

Re: Wetland Cillates
Looks like Paramecium for sure! Great shots! The first one seems a bit stress as it is about to burst. Maybe because of pressure from the cover glass.

Diatoms
I was out with the boat collecting samples from a local lake and was surprised to get a huge amount of diatoms. Many which I have never encountered before. I dragged it after the boat for about 5 minutes just below the surface. My daughter was more interested to use the collecting device as a hat. I...

No, I have not tried that. I have to struggle to see cross-eye stereo at all and mostly fail in doing so... Therefore, I never enable that feature when stacking. Would be neat to see these in 3D for sure.Grahame wrote:Neat images.
Have you tried a cross-eye stereo of any of them ?

Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
Long time since I posted in this forum so I thought I would share a few images. I was out boating in august and noticed some small "algae" floating on the surface of the water. It was like small hairy balls and I took a sample in a beer can to check them out. To my surprise, they were not algae at a...

Re: Best Practices for Re-Using Slides and Coverslips
I clean my slides but throw away all cover glass after use. I have a box with glass to throw away and a box with glass to be cleaned. I never use cleaning fluid. Just rinse under tap water and wipe it off with a fiber cloth or my T-shirt. I only try to use high quality glass. All on ebay in bulk pac...

Re: Red Algae - Polysiphonia
Thank you all for you comments! Yes, I agree. Darkfield is a fantastic technique for beautiful images. I just bought a new oil darkfield condenser that will allow me to go all the way up to 100X at NA 1.4. Before I could only do 0.9.

Red Algae - Polysiphonia
I have been growing red algae in a salt water sample jar for some time. Grows in small balls of red threads. This is Polysiphonia at various magnifications and illumination techniques. Thank you all for your comments! Hi Håkan, great images, thank you for posting! I like the second image best - is this a blend of bright field and dark field? Bob No, it is reflected brightfield meaning external light source and a metallurgical objective. The other technique was fluorescent light wh...

Paramecium in polarised light
I shot this Paramecium in polarised light. Individually picked by a micro pipette to clean water for rinsing and then individually picked again and put in a clear water drop to remove all possible debris. 10X and 20X objectives was used. The last half was filmed in 120 frames per second to get a "sl...

Duplo Illuminata
Inspired by the photographer Stephen Wilkes (Instagram: @stephenwilkes) “Day to Night” images where both night and day are captured in a single image, I decided to capture microscopic beauty using dual illumination techniques and combine them into a single image. Some images in this serie, which I c...
