Re: What would produce this?

I reckon it is a spiral vessel of xylem, so part of a plant. The walls of these have spiral thickening to give strength.

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

It is interesting that you go to the Nikons, as they are the only ones shown that have no corrections at all for chromatic aberration, being designed for use with their 'CF' (chroma free) system of lenses where all the corrections were made in the objective. All the others are 'compensating' types, ...

Re: Formula for glycerin gelatin mounting medium

In labs phenol (or thymol) would usually be used as the preservative, but as amateurs we often struggle to get such chemicals, so folk like Walter have found substitutes that work as well, that are easily available. I know that laws in some States, and Australia in particular can be quite limiting, ...

Isn't this model supposed to come with a dedicated dark-field condenser? Presumably this comes with ready made stops off the right size...

Not sure therefore why you are making your own.

Not sure where you are in the UK, but I have just cleared out the study of a dear friend who died earlier in the year, and left several microscopes. Thus, the following are available; 1. Letz SM-Lux, mechanical stage, trinocular head, choice of Leitz optics, LED lighting. 2. Zeiss GFL with binocular...

Re: Question about a Zeiss Universal I have my eye on - expert opinion anyone?

I have had a quick look. All he is referring to in terms of the self constructed camera mount is the physical link, as he/she doesn't say what is inside optically. What should fit in there depends of the camera is going to be mounted as an 'focal' system, using the camera lens as part of it, or just...

Re: A new (?) home-made mounting medium for diatoms

Regarding Pleurax and other synthetic resins, the syntheses described by G Rosenfeldt and others are indeed fairly straightforward - in the hands of trained organic chemists, and the facilities of well-equipped laboratory. My ambition was only a recipe for a mountant that can be easily prepared by ...

Re: Wide field of view

To start the ball rolling...

My PZO stereo has a field of view of approx. 45mm at x4 and 18mm at x10.

My Zeiss Stereo has a field of view of 21mm at x10.

That is the lowest the Zeiss goes.

Hope this is of some help.

Re: A new (?) home-made mounting medium for diatoms

I would recommend Pleurax. It has a high enough RI, and is usually in alcohol, giving a number of benefits; 1. Not as toxic 2. Not as sensitive to any water in the prep 3. Can indeed be used with uncleaned diatoms, preserving the innards. Obviously striae detail is absent but it allows connected for...

I wonder if there is a way I could culture these guys and keep them going for awhile; both the Haematococcus and the Rotifers. I do have a liter of Volvox culture medium -- I wonder if that would work. I was saving it for Volvox but you never know when an opportunity would come up to grow some wond...

Nikon Labophot 2 undercarriage filters

The Nikon Labophot 2 has a small cartridge type system underneath, that houses two filters. One appears to be a 45mm diffuser, the other has a sort of cross-hatching pattern. Do they both work as diffusers together, or is one a heat filter? I should welcome an explanation. In some of the manuals, a ...

AO objectives and cover slip thickness

None of my AO objectives for my Series 10 have a figure for cover slip thickness on them. I realise there is no need for the first number of the usual '160/0.17', being infinity, but why no cover thickness? Moreover, looking through some literature, it isn't mentioned what thickness the correction i...

Re: Reichert interference condenser

Hi Charles, it is transmitted, and the turret condenser (black) was identical in style to the phase one I had for a Zetopan, years ago. As far as I remember, like the phase one, the positions were just numbered, with a numeral in a white circle. I had the instruction booklet for the phase, and drew ...

Reichert interference condenser

Hi, a friend was trying to get a Reichert DIC system up and running on his Neopan at the weekend. I was able to help him get some satisfactory images, but we didn't know what numbers on the turret correspond to what objectives. I am familiar with the Zeiss common slider system, where the condenser h...

Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase

I am on the lookout for an American Optical phase condenser to fit a Series 10, part number 1240 I believe. Also, a Ph x40 objective.

AO kit is very scarce here in the UK!

I have some Zeiss (West) kit in exchange if that suits, including Luminar holders and spectacle condensers.

kind regards

As an owner, and lover, of a Series 10, I am getting a lot out of this thread. This is partly because I am in the UK, and they seem like Hen's teeth over here. Re: Partially stuck Zeiss phase contrast condenser for the Zeiss W GFL microscope

The photos help a lot. It is a GFL as you say (and said) the W part confused me, I guess now you meant it to mean West. Anyway, I would try some light sewing machine oil or something, essentially to clean the rack on the condenser rack. Then just move it up and down a few times to loosen up. There s...

Re: Partially stuck Zeiss phase contrast condenser for the Zeiss W GFL microscope

Hi there, first, can you confirm which microscope. I assume from what you say, it is Zeiss West, but the GFL has a round base, and the WL a rectangular base. The substage being stiff is common, and as you say, not helped by an unused microscope. The first question asked above is because the substage...

Re: Zeiss photomicroscope question

Hi Carl, these were all 160mm tube length microscopes. They only really differ in the power supplies and electronics supporting the camera. By the time of the model III, you didn't need something the size of a small fridge to operate it! I have had all three at some point, and have access to manuals...
