Re: Desmids On My Mind
Like the LED holder with the eccentric positioning gizmo. By the look of it the controller is off the shelf - I can't read what it says on it in order to identify it. Could you post a photo of the controller or tell us what the make and model is? Sorry, a couple more questions. Do you get banding? C...

Re: Desmids On My Mind
Bill, I'm using my trusty AO 120, which is similar to the 110 but has the 100W lamp house and 3 filter wheel annex hanging off the back. It came to me with a missing lamp and power supply, and I converted to LED. Nice setup, would be interested in seeing your LED conversion. Like how Phase in the l...

have seen some amazing images of it on the web, will have another go at a higher magnification, see if I can do better.

Was not sure what it was at first hence I left the name out, now think it might be Botryococcus
Apparently the yellow is oil, squeezed out by the cover slip pressure.

25x, Oblique, 350µm length-ways, 7 image stack in Photoshop.
Think the yellow discoloration is due to the cover slip pressing down on it.
By the time I came across it the water had largely evaporated.

Not saying to get this one in particular, and there are risks in buying second hand, but this is a very big step up from what you linked to despite missing an objective. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AO-SPENCER-AMERICAN-OPTICAL-TRINOCULAR-MICROSCOPE-W-PLAN-ACHRO-OBJECTIVES-/251557506583?hash=item3a91feee1...

Re: Cleaning eyepiece and objective lenses
What the formula does is give you a range of magnification for each objective. It is one of the reasons why top manufactures have a large selection. In order to get the most out of 800x you ideally need an NA in the range of 0.75 - 0.85 These are genuine guidelines, and as such it is a good idea not...

Re: Cleaning eyepiece and objective lenses
I see with plenty enough resolution with my 20x EP giving me great views with 800X on a 40x objective. If your 40x objective has an NA (Numerical Aperture) of 0.65, which most do, then the last 150x of that 800x is empty magnification. In empty magnification though structures appear larger, no addi...

This fellow split before I got all of the shots I had hoped to get for a stack, ended up short two. It is a little game they play - first they keep you waiting for ages until they stop, then they move just before you finish the stack. They can keep it up longer than I can. I ordered a blue filter f...

Would be interesting, but unfortunately I do not have anything over 0.65 dry.For example compare the effect of the optivar on say a planachro 40X/0.65 vs 40X/0.85-0.95 apo or plan apo?

If I recall correctly and if I am not confusing your December image with another I think we had identified it as an Euglena
