Re: Want to buy new compound microscope
I just went through a somewhat similar instance where I was looking to spend around $1000 for a stereomicroscope, I had reviewed a number of models and had a selection of about 6 I figured were reasonable candidates. I reached out to the community for advice on selecting, as I had no direct experien...

Re: Repository of exotic diatoms?
I have one of the uiquitous cheap import centrifuges often labelled only as 800-1. It's cheap in both price and assembly quality, but aside from a few minor repairs it has been reliable thus far. I wouldn't trust it in a professional lab environment where it would see heavy use, but in my home lab i...

Re: BH-1 condenser pinion problem
If you mean the Olympus BH1 series, specifically the pinion for the condenser, I too will need a replacement for this. I've not tried modeling any helical gears in CAD so that is an unknown for me. If nothing can be found I'm willing to give modelling it a try, but I will need help getting info abou...

Welcome aboard, dunk.
There's an incredible knowledgebase here to tap into.
Do you have a compound already and any particular subjects you hope to view? If you have a compound scope already, what do you have? Happy with it?

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
After considering everyone's input, I think I am going to try and acquire an AO Cycloptic and see how things go. By reports it seems to fit most of my requirements, but more importantly it will give me a chance to find out what I actually need without inordinate expense. Then, once I've managed to g...

(solved) Wanted AO Cycloptic 56M, 58M, 59M
Title pretty much says it all.
I don't mind a few dings and chips, but I need it to be in good shape optically.
Must have eyepieces (10x or 15x) and will compensate accordingly for any extras (eyepieces, barlows, etc)

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
The problem with a compound microscope at 40x is that it won't have sufficient working distance for dissection. And even if you did get an extra long working distance 40x objective, it wouldn't have the stereo effect you want to get depth perception. Absolutely, using the compound isn't an option f...

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
The gadget dates back to 70ies, I think I saw it in one of the Wild brochures from back then. Wild has been part of Leica Microsystems since about 1990. Of course, the gadget has now been copied by other brands...the unfortunate way of lesser makers. Interesting device! As for copying, such is the ...

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
Do you know from previous experience what high magnification you'll want? New users are often surprised how much detail comparatively low magnification (e.g. 20x, 30x) yields. The lower the magnification, the more of a 3D effect you'll have and the more room to do your dissection tasks. It might be...

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
There are a lot of great options. Do you have a good idea of how much working distance you need, and what field of view you want to cover? Getting a 5mm field of view doesn't require anything too extreme (about 4x~ mag on a stereo with 10x oculars, depending on the field number) but I'd assume you'...

Re: Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
I've had a Meiji stereo microscope for about 20 years. It's held up pretty well. Good for general purpose work around the lab. Here's a link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Meiji-Techno-EMZ-13TR-Trinocular-Microscope/dp/B072FNBFKC Might be worth looking at. Thanks, I'll look into that as we...

Seeking selection advice for stereo microscope
Hello everyone, My interests have taken me into a new area and I find that my compound microscopes aren't really up to the task for this, so I find myself in need of a stereo microscope, but it unfortunately needs to have relatively high magnification. I will be working on fairly small insects with ...

Heather, thank you very much for your kind comment ! Will go to the same place to look for this grass .... Unless I have misread your location, you shouldn't have much trouble locating sedges along much of the lakeshore. There are large numbers of them up by Montrose Beach (bring the dog if you hav...

Brinkmann
Here is my Brinkmann, I don't have much information about it and I welcome any and all information about it. I have heard is actually a Zeiss model. If this is true, I am wondering how compatible it might be with other models should I choose to expand it's functionality at some point. Design-wise, i...

Re: Identification and general literature on fresh water protists
I have not reviewed it myself (yet), but I have seen recommendations of "Fresh-Water Invertebrates of the United States: Protozoa to Mollusca" by Pennak recommended. It appears to be much of what you're looking for, though the price may not be. Used copies of older versions are substantially more af...
