Re: My New Microtome

Thanks Too expensive! I think we're saying that the wax jumps over any gap, like this. If it's flexible enough to run over your sellotaped razor blade, that makes sense. It leaves an interesting potential issue (for DIY blade holder makers) at the arrowed point. You really wouldn't want that rubbing...

Re: HAND MICROTOME on ebay

Still can't really make out what's where. Could the spring hold a stem against the toothed edge?

Re: My New Microtome

Sorry JB, It's me that's nuts, I missed a page out, ie I was replying to page 1 - this image http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/download/file.php?id=2356 Shows some loose disposables, which I think are like some I have. What does the clamp look like, and also too as well. what stops the w...

Re: HAND MICROTOME on ebay

The spring - is it to push up on the piston, to take up the play in the screw thread?
Otherwise the cutting of the knife could tend to press the piston in, or more likely pull it out, and you'd get (more) erratic thicknesses.

Re: HAND MICROTOME on ebay

Pith. Now then Bill, I am rather of the opinion that you are taking it . I was referring to the Brunel description: The section platform has a smooth and durable surface with a four inch diameter cutting area. The unit is ideally suited for producing hand cut sections of botanical material where the...

Re: HAND MICROTOME on ebay

I can't work out where the spring clip is in relation to the rest. Perhaps it just holds the parts in tension . Is there a "click" when you turn the adjuster? Is it for that? I have a simple thing which is one up from a bolt, which clicks at 10 micron increments. This one -older version anyway. http...

Re: Re DIY polarizing filters

Most camera pols don't go very extinct and do have a colour cast, often blue.
But I see one can buy "Variable neutral density" filters which must be a pair. Perhaps they're better.

Re: My New Microtome

Nice posting John. I have a few blades like that in with the cut-throat and rusty triangle which came in a box. Could you do a snap some time of the holder? It may be possible to make such a thing. One thing I can't tell is how the wax slices run away from the edge without snagging on something :? I...

Re: Greetings from Surrey. UK

I have "won" a horizontal lapping machine. Not sure if it'll actually help. There's always pottery, though 1450rpm might be a bit quick.

Re: Greetings from Surrey. UK

Thanks Bill. That's useful
He doesn't recount the familiar tale, of the sample transition from a perfect specimen just slightly too thick, to a slurry of particles washing down the drain.

- That's interestin...

Re: Greetings from Surrey. UK

Thanks all. :P It appears that wood block holder 52211 is what I'm looking for. However, without tricky modifications, I doubt I'll be able to use the beast for rocks - the subject which has caught my attention for the moment. There are many options for getting samples down to 1mm or so. Thereafter ...

Re: Polarizing setup?

Mrsonchus -love the slides :) --------------------------------------------------- Gasman: You might want to play with a "Quarter Wave Plate". You can buy then as films, but if you have/find/buy a camera "circular" polariser, what you get is a polarising fiilter with a QWP on one side. You can reason...

Re: Greetings from Surrey. UK

Thanks for the reply Jim.. A little while ago I thought "microtome sounds interesting", then when I saw a Cambridge rocker which was a bit rusty and in need of tlc, I gave it a home. Then another one sort of had to join it because it had a stone and a blade and instructions. Then someone said "look ...

Greetings from Surrey. UK

Hi. I'm retired. I don't have a SEM in the basement, or a DIC Pol fluorescence Leitzeissnikoly in the attic, or the education to know what to do with them if I had. But I do have a few bits to play with and an interest in how stuff works, whether animal vegetable mineral, or man made. I've just got ...
