Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn Filter looks impressive, have you covered the holes to stop the sand blocking the filter. Yes I received my order, the Rotifers are type L Brachionus plicatillis, they looked like dust in the water but could be seen as living creatures with a 20X magnifying glass through the side of the pou...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn Yes you should get it no problam from a textile store, look for nylon as it won't rot you only need enough to cover the bottom of the tank. I think you should look for some food for the bit and bobs that came with your living rock. I think this is an oversight on my part but if you are grow...

Re: Culturing a food chain

In the wild they will be feeding on Phytoplankton, but that's phase 2 They don't only live in the salt lakes they live in numerous locations throughout the world but the salt lakes and San Francisco Bay are the two places they collect eggs from, if you use the boiled egg for food don't put it in you...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Thanks Dave. I'll put the undergravel filter on hold to pick it up tomorrow. I'm not at all sure what is going on with the Artemia. I've been feeding them a spirulina fish food, which I crush; I've also been feeding them micro algae. I've also started with a fresh batch of cold (not frozen) shrimp ...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Yes that's right, buy a filter that firs your aquarium, you may have to cut it down a bit it can be a little bit short if you can get just a bit small but don't have any large areas that haven't got filtration, also buy the filter first and if you need fine curtain to stop the sand going through don...

Re: Culturing a food chain

I have an under gravel filter set up in my tank, I used gravel purely because I had it but coral sand would have been a better choice, depending on what you want to use the tank for will depend on the the flow rate through the filter, if you have filter feeders then there is a danger that you will f...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi. Shawn I'm not the best a writing posts but here goes, Filtration for efficient bacterial filtration you need a large surface area, coral sand provides this large surface area and is suitable for marine aquarium (it should not be used in freshwater aquarium) , the bacteria lives on the surface of...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn and Charlie Shawn the tank looks great you will have to have chat with Big Al regarding feeding your living rock as I see you have quite a number of living bits on it, usually living rock has a colony of bacteria established in it and anything else included is a bonus. Did the shop recommen...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn The exoskeletons will just lay in the bottom of the tank, they may desolve back into the water if the conditions allow it but they don't seem to cause any problems. Glad you got a bargain sounds like a good deal, look forward to seeing the results, my shrimp are in a small container at a te...

Re: What do I do with loads of sections?

I have read all of Water Dioni's articles a number of times and I agree they are a insperation and are highly recommend, I will hunt out your posts and have a good read thank you, I also have a few kits from Brunel Microscopes, but have to admit nothing happens in a hurry this end.

Re: What do I do with loads of sections?

Very interesting and informative post, plant sections is something I have wanted to try for a long time I think I will have to leave it until the summer now so I can try with some soft stems. If I have the process right you treat the sample with FAA then section and store them on slides, do you trea...

Peter.
Hi many thanks Peter, i thought is was but was not sure the sample came from a little below the high water mark, so these spend most of there time
in the air I thought Rotifers lived in the water.

Found this little fella on the beach

I found this little chap in some algae I scraped from the break water at Hastings beach, would I be right in
thinking its a Rotifer. This was taken at 40X
4X objective and 10X eyepiece.

Re: Culturing a food chain

Sorry to see your little starfish met an untimely end, probably got crushed with the move around these things happen, the shrimp will grow give them time, I would get this tank established then you can decide what to do with it.

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn Looks like the project has turned 180 degrees, nothing wrong with that. If you are heading for an aquarium the the rules change, you will have to reinstate an efficient filter system, my preference is for under gravel but I think you have a filter that will do the job. What you put in the t...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn The tank looks good, $100 is probably not a bad price hopefully it will last a long time you will need some form of life in the tank in the next week or two in order to complete the cycle. Good news the shrimp in the bottle are doing well can you see they are growing. The live sand is usual...

Re: Culturing a food chain

OK, posted this without seeing your last 2 responses. I fed them. Will up the light and airflow a bit. Yes if you want to grow them on quick keep the water well on the move with air and keep the water just with a hint of cloud so there's plenty of food in the water, sounds a bit of a contradiction ...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Just had another look at the video the air is fine, you could give it a bit more if you have it, 200 shrimp feed them a small pinch of food and feed again when the water clears may be 2 or 3 days, when you transfer them into the tank don't put the water out the bottle in the tank it will be knackere...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn There's a good chance it's not enough food, but it's a fine balance to start with if you want to keep the water, if you buy shrimp they will need more food than hatchlings, the only thing you can do is keep an eye on the water if it goes cloudy then don't feed until it clears. Why no grow t...

Re: Culturing a food chain

Hi Shawn No you're not inept, far from it one of three things have happened either the shrimp have ended up in the filter although that's a long shot, or the shrimp starved as they couldn't find the small amount of food that's quit possible or the filter filtered out the food. The one good thing is ...
