As to price, do not use what sellers ask as a guide on eBay, rather go to Advanced, enter the item description, tick Sold Listings and then click Enter. Prices items were sold for appear in green. The info on the wide angle is probably correct for yours. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag171/map...

I am just waiting now, for a relaxed nematode to make it's entrance.
That would be a first :)

Re: Spencer NO 1-2 from 1933

It seems the choice of light source, eyepieces and objectives are key to making it a good or bad tool.
Illumination and the objectives are probably the two most important components, I would choose skill as the third.

Re: A mystery ciliate identified

Congratulations! Both on the video and on giving Protistology a step up. Had thought amateur contributions were effectively limited to the 19th Century. No longer. Agree that (without the information you supplied) it did indeed look like it was building a Lorica of some sort. I know modesty preclude...

Re: Spots

I did lower the condenser and spots were still visible. Spots were visible without an objective so I ruled that out as well. Since I image using eyepiece projection I took a photo with just the eyepiece to rule out if the spot are on one of the eyepiece lens surfaces. They are not. Looks like we ar...

Definitely dust on camera sensor.
I seem to add more every time I try to remove them.
Only really visible when magnified by the microscope.
Do a web search on cleaning camera sensors.

Re: The Clean Microscope

They say never clean the internal components of a microscope ... This was written for laboratory personnel in institutions that have a service/maintenance contract with Zeiss. It is a bit like the void clause when you open up an electronic appliance that is still under a guarantee. It is true howev...

Re: The Clean Microscope

What element is meant by the phrase "The cover of the opening through which light exits"?
Sounds like a translation from German :) I believe it refers to the glass cover of the light source for example.

If that is the case you might have to pull it towards you rather than lift to take it out.

Re: Present for a kid

If you suspect that a stereo microscope is not what you need , here is one of the standard workhorse student diasopic microscopes of the past 30 or 40 years. It is a monocular. The price is excellent, and they have been tested. In the future ,if the interest grows, a binocular head is available for...

Re: Present for a kid

Agree that a stereo microscope is probably the best introduction to microscopy for a child.
There is plenty to see at low magnifications.
I think it is also important to keep within budget when possible - if and when the child's interest develops, better microscopes can be budgeted for and purchased.
