Re: Doing Diatoms

ZZ, glad you are not in a hurry, as I have to pick one of 3 machines to transfer a ton of vhs tapes. Not wanting to waste the Pensacola sand I have been trying to filter other stuff, with messy results. Now I am at Ocean Shores, and will bring home a bucket of real sand. With my lab packed I am quit...

Re: Doing Diatoms

Two questions: 1. I have 2 vcrs headed for the dump, but I could salvage the drums for any slide ringer wannabe's. 2. Fan, how did you ship the ziplock to Rod? I'm still looking for the cheapest way to ship sand. 2.1 For the first gross filtration I'm looking at putting a round mesh screen into a Bu...

Re: Finding Diatoms

It is the Lumahai Beach, home to one of the worlds richest olivine sand deposits, and the most dangerous beach. Lumahai means bad water. Any aerial view will show the lava spike at the West end. I found a Hawaiian lifeguard forum, and they advised using a scoop taped to a long stick, so as to not cl...

Re: Finding Diatoms

I got the #210 and #500, and I assume the # number is the same as microns. The small squares work well over petri dishes, but for larger samples having the mesh in a frame seems useable. The sieve set Lorez referenced was way too expensive, but very attractive. I also need to attach a scoop/sieve to...

I shall stick to collecting from marine environments, like the warm and sunny beach where
South Pacific was filmed. Your comment, Lorez, well taken, thanks.

Morning, Dewey. You might want to wait til after your cataracts are fixed. Everything is brighter,
and a wonderful color shift occurs.

Permanent analyzer placement in Nikon Eclipse

Not wanting to frequently remove the head on my E600 to place an analyzer filter for polarization lighting, can I leave it there? I know it should be oriented front to back, but what affect would it have on BF, DF, and phase ? I leave a high quality polarizer on my dslr with no detrimental effects, ...

Re: Microscope storage

John, been studying on this, and made some progress, most articles seem to be UK based! l am ok with the polarizer placed on top of the field iris, it's the locatation of the upper element. Some place it right on top of the specimen, others over the top of the objective, and others in the head assem...

Please forgive me for that post. I misread someones question about which
one I bought. I was so obsessed with trying to copy and paste with this clunky
Ipad it did not dawn on me as to what I was doing. I learned the hard way,
and again, very sorry.

"I think the sand/mineral particles are heavier (more dense) than diatoms and should sink to the very bottom of centrifuge tubes. Diatoms layer should stay above sands, if you spin fast enough. At least, that would happen in research lab centrifuges."

What designates a 'research lab centrifuge'?

Yup, graphite fingerboard, carbonfiber neck, and ballbearing tone ring suspension.
One of the first made, and handed to me by Tom at Wintergrass.
The fiddle is downstairs, next to the ukelele.
