Re: First 20 water bears of the day

I'm glad I live here instead of Ontario! :D A lot colder in the Winter but a lot more pleasant in the Summer. Besides, no alligators :) I have seen only one Tardigrade and it kept wiggling. Some of your images are quite good. As John said, Enjoy the forum, you're with friends here - as are we all. ...

Sometimes a similar (but different!) effect can be achieved with polars.
Ah yes. Plant sections in polarized light can be enjoyable as well as very revealing of hidden details.

More Daisy Anomalies

Did some more transverse sections of daisy stems from the bunch I got from a florist. Every section exhibited the same strange cell structure as in my first post. Here are four (not very good) images of two sections that exhibit this anomaly. First two are stained with Toluidine Blue and the second ...

Lilly, don't pounce yet. Amscope and Omax are very similar. See this site for a comparison of two models: http://microscopegenius.com/battle-of-the-microscopes-amscope-omax-compound-microscope-comparison-b120b-cs-m82es/ Both are good for the price and for a newby I do not suggest buying a used scope...

Re: Anomaly in Daisy TS

I'd say the apparent circular structure is a point of contact perhaps from a dissecting-needle or forceps and a resulting hole made in the section by such contact. Interesting theory to consider. Don't think it was anything I did as several other TS's from the same stem showed the same anomaly. Thi...

Anomaly in Daisy TS

First time I have seen something like this unusual cluster of cells in the Sclerenchyma. I also have no idea what the dark center is. It was not in any of the other vascular bundles in the stem. Stained with red food dye. Images with 10x, 20x, and 40x objs. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss152/j...

Looks like you are getting your camera to work better but why the rose colour?

Jim! Do you mix the salt with water and then let it dry on the slide?
Yes.
I'm really loving the colours you capture!
That's the fun about polarized crystals. Lots of interesting shapes and beautiful colours.

Epsom Salt Crystals

I haven't posted much lately but recently someone posted some polarized crystal images so I decided to do some more. Here are two polarized images of Epsom salt crystals (Magnesium Sulfate). First one with the 10x obj. and the second one with the 20x. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss152/jtallon...

Re: Achromatic plan, is it worth it?

The nice thing about plan objs is the edge to edge flat field. One still has to continuously focus as critters move around but IMO for stationary subjects they are worth it. Especially for the 4x and 10x objs. I upgraded for my scope and am glad I did.

Is the pink cast an artifact of the camera? I expect you can correct that with the software.

Keep them coming.

Don't apologise for movie theater 3D glasses. That's what I use and they are fine.
