Re: The best Camera for Photomicrography
The diagonal artifacts do not look like aliasing to me -- way too regular and not closely related to the image structure. It is strange how the strength of the artifact appears to be related to more gradual intensity gradients. If I understand, the Rising Sun has the finest pixel pitch and therefor...

The amazing SEM image [click on the thumbnail] at the bottom of this page: https://naturalhistory.museumwales.ac.uk/diatoms/browsespecies.php?-recid=3534 gives a good indication of the structural detail which we simply cannot image properly with any optical microscope. Re: The best Camera for Photomicrography
The artifacts in the RS example do appear to be jagged diagonal lines as described. Is the article saying that the lens (presumably a photo eyepiece in this case) is too sharp for the 1" sensor? Yes, I think that’s effectively what they are saying, although it’s perhaps an unusual way of putting it...

David,
Sorry to be a pest, but may I suggest that, for clarity, you identify the three images in your post
... They appear to be in reverse order compared to those on the web page.

Re: Vibration problems
If his Olympus is giving the OP grief, my gut tells me a Panasonic mechanical shutter might not be an improvement. Did Panasonic ever tame their mechanical shutters or did they resort to using an electronic shutter at exposure times when it would most help? . I’m sure you are correct ... but that w...

Re: Vibration problems
Very happy to continue the discussion ... It’s a problem which many of us have to face, and this seems a good place to share ideas and experiences. I believe 75RR already confirmed that vibration isolation between the camera and microscope (in the form of a tripod) works: . Re: Vibration problems
If, as has been suggested [and is probable], the vibration is induced by the camera shutter ... then neither (a) isolating the camera body from the microscope tube, nor (b) isolating the microscope from the floor is likely to bring much benefit. (a) would simply allow the camera body to move in rela...

Re: Vibration problems
34 tons makes a nice ‘mechanical earth’ but might be excessive for the typical amateur’s situation. Indeed! Was thinking marble floor tiles (slab was a bit of an exaggeration), the smaller ones tend to be 30 cm x 60 cm by 15mm or so. One cut in half should make a nice neoprene sandwich. It won’t do...

On the vibration isolation issue The best solution I have seen [short of a very expensive commercial table] is to put a go-cart inner tube between two heavy paving slabs. Here’s a tidier version of my little spreadsheet
. .
As presented :
D7 = D3
C5 = (D3 x E4) / (E4 - D3)
E9 = (D7 x C8) / (C8 - D7)
and it’s showing 1:1 magnification
... which is a convenient check on the calculation formula

All these AO/Reichert infinity bodies actually do focus by moving the objective, not the stage, so taking "focus needs to be raised" literally your original interpretation would be correct. . Thanks for confirming that, Hans Hopfully apochronaut can tell us what objective he uses Yes, my 5mm was ju...

. […] but: The focus needs to be raised about 200 microns. I think this is not a huge distance, but also not obviously negligible. Re: Reichert 410 "Microstar IV" head -- corrective element present in binocular path but not trinocular camera port
I’m not sure how much this helps, but I have just been playing with the simple lens formula [ignoring the modern convention where u is negative] ... 1/u + 1/v = 1/f can be rearranged as u = (fv)/(v-f) ... which is easy to pop into a spreadsheet or calculator, for some spot checks. Taking a 5mm lens ...
