Quoting your budget in pounds, and looking at Brunel, implies that you are UK based.
If you want to PM me, I can probably help out, having had a couple of dozen such stands through my hands in the last few years (occupational hazard) and am also UK based.

I think that some prefer Euparal because it has a clearing effect, but also because it tends to be more tolerant of water, hence if the dehydration is incomplete, this is less of an issue. I think IPA is an acronym often used for iso-propyl alcohol. Eric Marson, founder of Northern Biological Suppli...

Now and then, I have come across microscope slides where a short section of silk has been enclosed in a cell, to make a permanent slide. Spider silk is said to be the inspiration for some technology applications in modern times, but the excerpt below shows another side; spider web.jpg Many modern fa...

Re: Interesting DIY phase contrast
Yes, Graham is very good at making things for his microscopes. In the early days of Phase, when manufactured systems were difficult to obtain in the UK, and expensive too, a number of folk experimented. A quite comprehensive article of over 10 pages was published in 'The Microscope' in 1947 by Micha...

Because the metal plate that houses the collector lens (shown in Steve's picture) is magnetic, you can use this fact to hold whatever is housing your LED. Shown below is just a repurposed lamp tube (from an old Olympus I think) with a Cree LED inside. There is a small neodymium magnet glued to the f...

Perhaps you could outline how you would use a microscope in these studies.
In teaching students some of these techniques; gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc. we never used a microscope, and I am struggling to see how a compound microscope in particular would help.

Looks like the CL model. I think this sold in the early 1970s, and was a basic student model.

The Olympus "Photomicro Adapter L" has a fixed aperture at the bottom. I have a PDF of Instructions for the FXA if it is any use, dated 1986.
Literature I have includes the Microphone FX, S , FXA and SA but not the FXL.

You’ll need a vertical facing filament to fill the aperture at high numerical apertures. That's good to know. Thank you. My current Optiphot has a horizontal filament so it will be interesting to compare the two bulb varieties under various conditions. The bulb stated in the Optiphot manual is a Ph...

A nice talking point Michael. I am intrigued now to know when this box was put out on circuit, principally because in early 1993 I put a box out onto circuit that included a slide I had made of a small piece of Polarchrome film. As has been mentioned above, the great advantage of this technology is ...

A good explanation from Pete regarding corrections. However, I cannot help but be slightly amused by the change made by Olympus, bearing in mind this, from a booklet they published in 1985 I think. It is a 40 page offering entitled 'Basics of the optical Microscope'. A.jpg Perhaps they no longer con...

Re: Eyepiece micrometer diameter?
They certainly made them in this size (21mm), I find in my box of micrometers that I have three of this size;
One a grid (10 x 10, labelled 1-10 down one side, A-J down the other)
One with 0-100 divisions
One with two such lines at right-angles, ie. a cross.

A friend has asked me to test if a Moticam 2300 USB 2 camera works, as I have a microscope and they do not. Unfortunately, he cannot find the software disc. The Motic Images Plus 2 software seems readily available as a trial (2 weeks) from their website, but strangely, only for Windows, not a Mac. Y...
