Re: Brainstorm: Two Intersecting Challenges

Oh noooo... not more complication steering inexorably towards monetization..... Why can't we simply be happy to have this excellent forum in it's current form? Is it broken? No. If I see another web-ste/forum that I have to jump through hoops to get near I think I'll scream my head off. There's a ve...

Re: Coverglass Clamp

Love this idea, always a problem with as you say thicker mounts.
Just ordered a pack of 20 from you know where, <£7 delivered to the U.K.....
Thanks for the tip.

Great for permanent hand-section mounts not to mention smaller whole-mounts.

Ordered these, they look identical to yours,

Simply fascinating, and a great image - I suspected they were squashed-down but no problem there! Nice level of detail - the number of spicules may be of taxonomic value too, as it is said to be in that excellent PDF of the new species discovered. May I ask what set-up you're using? A BH2 (can't get...

Re: Electronic Front-Curtain Shutter

The article reminds me of a question I have on shutter shock: To what extent will the in-body image stabilization offered in some of the newer cameras help with this? Since in-body image stabilization works by moving the sensor to compensate for camera shake, unless I'm missing something, it seems ...

Success! I found a paper re a recently identified new species of velvet mite, Here's the PDF ..... I think these structures are known as, in this paper at least, "scobalae" - there's a superb image of such scobalae around the eye-region of said newly discovered species. (see PDF link) A snip from wi...

Hmmm, the plot thickens...... They have a look also of some type of spore-cases, but their apparently ordered orientation 'along' the legs in particular suggests otherwise? More detail/research is needed! Great images and subject.

Re: Velvet Mite

Interesting and good images. Perhaps a few of the 'dots' may be removed, with or without that part to which they are attached, and examined perhaps with an oil-mountant and coverslip on a compound 'scope's higher and transmitted illumination - I refer to oil to place the sample pieces into and then ...

Re: Success - Permanent Mounts

So, do you mean when you say "left it in there" that you left it in the GALA 40 then water-rinsed? What did you mount it in, just water? Did you find it with the dropper when it was in a water-bath, then drop the specimen (in a water-bath drop) onto the slide then seal? What happened with the G-40? ...

Aha! Form & Function! Yes, lignin - a hard substance found acting as reinforcement for parts of a plant that need it, especially in the cell-walls of the conducting 'tubes' of water (and other things), known as Xylem. The thickening rings, spirals. helices etc give the support needed to keep these v...

Very nice! There may be a slight problem though. The various Leitz models (I am a very proud ex-owner of a magnificent Orthoplan and SM-LUX) each require a different supplemental-lens (K4 and K1 possibly as I remember, I have a past post somewhere on this forum https://www.microbehunter.com/microsco...

Re: Proposal for New Sub-Forum: Morphology and Behavior

Interesting discussion, worth looking over and having a think-about. My first reaction was perhaps the expected 'why do we need it?', a pefectly reasonable response I think. But when I re-read linuxusr's post above I saw the point. There is, and has always been, a good strong interest in this forum ...

Re: Plant or Alga?

You didn't mention magnification and I'm no expert, but I think it's plant fiber. This is based on seeing similar images in the past. I'm sure someone will correct or confirm my suspicion. Yes, it's a section of a Xylem vessel-element's lignified secondary-wall by the looks of it - primary Xylem I ...

Re: Olympus BHA renovation

Looks to me as though the larger screw 'part' is the moving-part - even seems it may have a couple of stoppers (the little plates visible at either end of it's proposed travel) below onto which it may well have bound at one end of it's travel-range? I'd leave the three screws in as I suspect they ar...

Re: "Improved" version of Olympus BH2 swing-out filter holder BH2-FH

It really is very handy, but I certainly like metal parts! The field-iris ring is definitely not obstructed though - I find now with my regular use that my fingers 'remember' where it is without needing to check at all - it's use, as most parts I think, becomes second-nature. Similarly for the stage...

Re: "Improved" version of Olympus BH2 swing-out filter holder BH2-FH

I use this Olympus filter-changer that holds 3 filters, for my BX50. It slots onto the light-port then turns to be parallel to the 'scope to lock in place. It holds 45mm filters - I use it for different ND filters (as I like to have the illumination turned to full as it's Halogen) and also have a da...

Re: Recognizing Content

I don't use a hand microtome for hand-sectioning either - they're far too laborious in use I find. I simply hold the part in my fingers and run the blade parallel to my finger-nail, with a tiny change of angle (from the very-nearly-vertical) another section may be cut. With a sharp blade this simple...

Sounds like a wrong reading to me, too thin even for a #0 coverslip let alone a #1. The oft-quoted 0.17 seen on objectives is the 'ideal thickness' of coverslips if thickness numer #1.5.

Here are the numbers,

It can get quite involved, but the basics are straightforward enough, as always, once you've done it a few times. Starting with virtually no experience does I very quickly discovered tend to lead to an explosion of equipment, bits & bobs, blades everywhere, exotically stained fingers and clothes.......

Ah yes, it needs to be 'shared' or within a shared folder, but when you as the 'owner' view it it's fine. I sometimes check this by using an incognito window from Chrome - it makes you look like just another user (rather than the owner with of course full permissions) when trying to access media, so...
