Re: Poor man’s Kohler illumination
Kohler himself used cardboard with holes cut in them. It seems also like you could focus on the frosted glass and then simply move the condenser up about 10mm or so.

Some of those Galen objectives are really quite nice. The condenser is tough to track down.

Re: What are the most common inverted scopes?
Bausch and Lomb presented an inverted scope in the 19th century. It didn't really catch on right away and they stopped making inverted scopes until the projection scope design from mid century or the I think Photozoom a little while later. They also sold a few inverted metalloscopes now and then tha...

If I ever get it working I might try to post a video of a 'tode whipping around to demonstrate the shutter system. Until then, I'm out two cameras.

Re: A potential Game-Changer
So, after having used the Pi HQ camera for a couple of years, I of course bought this one. I can say that it seems like a decent enough camera, but I would recommend against it. There is essentially no software to run it that I can find anywhere, just a thousand supercilious dweebs whose advice is m...

I think you will likely want the compensating eyepieces 167 or 168 with that one, or perhaps the planoscopic.

Re: 4mm N.A. 0.85 vs. 4mm N.A. 0.66
It is important because after an NA of about .66, small differences in cover glass have comparatively larger effects in the quality of the image. It's highly nonlinear, such that to use a cover glass at all with a "high dry" objective, either very precise regulation of the thickness of glass or a co...

If you have any Hammond organ oil that stuff will work its way through any tiny gaps and wick into crevices, loosening hardened grease. Sewing machine oil also works pretty good-- would not recommend 3-in-1 as it gums up.

Re: Modular high power inverted scope
I believe it and am always in favor of empirical investigation of new techniques. In fact, the limitations of hwd condensers has prevented me from doing a lot high power work on the old invertoscop, so I would be interested if you find success with this approach.

Re: Modular high power inverted scope
As to your first thought, in fact anything involving micromanipulation at high power is far better on an inverted scope. The problem is not "lack of slip" or "lack of slide." You can certainly use both on an inverted scope. The problem with oiling up a slide on an inverted scope is that the oil is ...

I can't think of an application that a high power immersion inverted scope that wouldn't be much better treated by car ful isolation and preparation of the sample to be viewed with a usual microscope. Re: Modular high power inverted scope
I have an old Zeiss optin-era invertoscop and a few things a like about are that it was very cheap and also I don't feel bad about changing stuff on it as it is not a work of art. A bad thing is rhat Zeiss stuff of many eras often falls apart with age and that includes the prisms in the heads of the...

Either way that would le.gthen the tube. Infact it's simpler for finite as it's very obvious that you are change the position of the objective with respect to the eyepiece. In infinite systems there is a reference length but it's my understanding that objective performance will not suffer from chang...

An inverted scope is most excellent for someone that would like to observe a.habitat. an aquarium can be made by epoxying a large cover slip to the bottom of a plastic petri dish with a hole drilled or cut in the bottom. Re: Improving a toy microscope..add a condenser?
A condenser might make it a little brighter, but I doubt it will help the resolution too much. Toy objectives are not great. My experiments with toys and condensers could never make great images. I wouldn't bother trying to supe up a toy. You'd end up replacing every piece, and by then you should ha...
