Re: Microscope table

What I would do is to remove the existing desk and replace it with a massive lab bench:

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

OK, so , i tmay be that moly grease seperates or maybe it doesn't, but moly is also extremely difficult to clean (this is also the reason it is desirable as a lubricant). I have recommended silicone grease for plastic gears before as it usually doesn't attack plastics. These greases will work fine f...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

I use old white lithium grease. Don't use moly it can scratch i think? Also silicone grease is not preferred a true pain to try to clean off glass. It's not super duper critical to get the exact specific grease, just some things to think about.

Still working on that but it's taking a little longer as I decided to build a clean hood for assembling the plates.

Have you been oiling it to the bottom of your slide?

(That's a very nice df condenser)

Re: DIY apodized phase plates/objectives?

Ideally you want to sputter some metallic thin film on a plate as this would not have an effect on the phase of light that that penetrates. I worry if you somehow manage to cut two concentric rings from this material with a cutting plotter or whatever it's going to do something to the phase.of the s...

Thanks, Michael, for this fine combination of science and sweet prose ! Can we estimate its year of publication ? How do we translate the article's terminology to modern terms ? like, what is today's equivalent of a 1/8 lens, who sells "spotted" lenses or objectives, etc ? An 1/8 lens has a magnifi...

Re: DIY apodized phase plates/objectives?

I wouldn't go out and say it's impossible but were dealing with some pretty small margins for error here. Careful gluing stuff to your phase plate as I imagine you will not get it right the first time and then you are out a perfectly good phase plate. Also, maybe reflection should be the principle o...

Re: Greetings from a bored ex-biologist

Welcome to the forum! I may consult with you on feasible amateur fluorescence someday. Field curvature correction, which I believe is treated separately from spherical aberration in lens design, is certainly very important in hematology. It is much less important when chasing down the thrashing nema...

Re: Beginner shopping list (aside from scopes)

I never had any luck with Hempstead halide euparal. My bottle has not worked at all. Might as well get a contemporary resin medium and a matching clearing agent. I use omnimount and histoclear 2. Barring that you could try like white glue. Tweezers are a good investment just get some nice ones with ...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

small screwdrivers are fine you won't need any new parts since you won't lose any of these. If you can take apart a scroll saw and put it back together you can take apart a 1942 Dynoptic and I bet a Nikon S isn't too far removed from that. Best bet for the gears is that either they aren't broken. If...

If you like that stark hunk of machinery look there have been a few well-accoutered Zetopan microscopes I have seen sell here and there for less than $500. You might keep your eye out.

Re: Help Choosing between Laborlux K or Swift 380

If the K has a phase turret that's a no brainer buy it. No need to make your own darkfield filters when you have a phase turret you will be able to achieve darkfield better than homemade filters with the annular diaphragms. You can have just a couple phase lenses. I often have bf lens s alongside ph...

Re: Would it work or just catch on fire?

I would go ahead and go 10 watt as long as you are going to bother. There are some very high CRI dies out there, all still with something of a spike in the high frequencies but much smoother than previous generations. You may be able to solder some leads into a star led that the halogen plug with th...

these are not good microscope LED dies. You want a single LED die. All the calculations are from a point source approximately the size of a filament i.e. a single small LED.

Re: Pond water conservation in a 25 liter bucket

I get the impression that pond water organisms are continuously in flux as far as the most active species go depending on the environment. My son and were looking at some water from a bird bath as part of a school assignment and while rotifers were seen immediately after sampling, a few hours later ...
