Re: Microscopy poem by OpenAI

Yes, very interesting times. The first step for true AI is to become aware of its own existence and then it can start improving itself in pace much faster than we are likely to be able to control. The human intelligence is somewhat limited due to the size of the female pelvis. The newborn's brain ne...

Microscopy poem by OpenAI

Finally Friday and I wanted to share this poem with you. I asked the newly release artificial intelligence chatbot "ChatGPT" to write a poem about microscopy and search for the unknown. This is what it came up with: Through the lens of a microscope We explore the world unknown From cells and microbe...

Re: Optics on Olympus CX23

I have a CX23 and the optics are OK. They are Plan Achromats so not very advanced, but still good for general use. I would say the objectives are well inline with higher quality Chinese microscopes such as Motic etc. I have the model with Trinocular head which is good if you want to connect a camera...

The truth gets even more scary. They also live inside human bodies. IN DECOMPOSING BODIES!!!!

Re: Olympus U-DICT versus U-DICTS

I have the DICT-S. I have never noticed any difference in the image quality based on the position of the BFP switch. It looks equally good in either position, at least for my objectives. Some of these require the level in a pushed in position according to the specs. Let me know if you want me to me...

Re: Alternatives to official photo projection lenses?

Yes, I have been thinking about these myself, but I have not tried them. They should do just fine is my conclusion after doing some research. The tricky part will be to get a lens setup with the correct focal length and distances so that you also achieve parfocality with the eyepieces. It is on thin...

Re: Olympus U-CA

I am using the U-CA on my microscopes. The quality is fairly OK with no or little signs of aberration. However, every lens you add in the pipeline is a potential weak link causing quality degradation. I rarely use the 2X setting except for video, but frequently use 1.25X. The main advantage of the U...

Re: How to take measurements of things under the microscope?

My method is similar to what has been proposed above. Steps as follows. For each objective, 4X, 10X, 20X, etc: 1. Take a photograph of a stage micrometer and make sure you measure the width of the full circle of the field of view 2. Bring the image into an image viewer where you can count the number...

Algal blooms and their guards

A big thank you for that Victor! The project was about keeping track of harmful alga blooms. Residents around Vombjsön ...

I can ask some people at work, Håkan. I work at the aquatic ecology department in Lund, there are quite a few people there who work experimentally on algae. You might consider (unless you already have done so) BG-11 medium for culturing cyanobacteria, the variant without NaNO3 (based on a brief Google search for culturing Gloeotrichia but I suspect you've seen this too). Kind regards Wes Yes, sounds like a good idea. I have not tried BG-11. The questio...

Algal bloom under the microscope

During the summertime, algal bloom is a problem in Sweden as well as in many other countries. The most common algae, often called Blue-Green algae, are not really algae, but belong to another group of organisms, namely Cyanobacteria. This summer we had an explosion of cyanobacteria and other algae b...

Re: For fluorescence microscopy, specialized microscope camera or DSLR?

I totally agree with Robert here. I have also tested many microscope cameras, but I produce better images with DSLRs. One of the biggest issues I have had over the years with dedicated microscope cameras is that they require proprietary software which often is buggy and slow. Commercial software and...

I have the Olympus EP50 camera on my CX23. Works very well, but you could also just mount a DSLR camera and get excellent results. If you mount a DSLR, you need a series of tubes and adapters depending on your camera sensor size. If you decided to go for the DSLR route, I can give further advice on ...
