Re: A trinocular phase contrast Zeiss standard on eBay
One thing that I have spotted is a bit of corrosion on some of the screws. The objectives are crusty as well. As things on ebay tend to go bad rather than good and given the shabby appearance of the scope I'd make a guess and say it doesn't look like a particularly good deal Perhaps an unpopular op...

Re: How to explain it?
I like this thread! For many reasons, this type of periodontal clinical microscopy died out in the 1980's. I'm sure there are still many weird organisms living in there, unknown to science, but no one is looking for them any more. But why would people willingly abandon such a research niche? Seems i...

Re: So how do you prep a tuna slide?
Thats a cool channel that one can easily slip into binge watching. They use a well slide in this section but I suppose if you want to do this properly i.e. quantitatively I'd suggest you hydrolyse the biological material with hydrochloric acid, then centrifuge to collect the plastic bits and stain w...

Re: How to attach a modern camera to this Zeiss Universal accessory?
What you need is a Zeiss West 43.5 mm dovetail to either a male M42 or T2 adapter (see picture below). What worked for me was to add a M42 female to 52 mm male thread adapter but that could be any thread your camera lens accepts. As Bob had advised me at some point I bought a Canon 40 mm pancake len...

Re: Water immersion instead of oil immersion for darkfield
Interesting test, thanks. I am working on plotting glass-water-glass transmission vs. NA (somewhat separate issue from aberrations) as mentioned in the other thread but not finished yet. Might be useful to try to separate effect of watering the condenser vs. objective in this sort of experiment? I ...

Re: Anyone else use Air Purifiers?
Yes and I can't recommend one more. Absolutely fantastic, totally worth the 200 or 300 bucks I paid for it (came with a fancy HEPA filter and whatnot). I've been thinking about getting a de-humidifier as well, seems like a logical extension of my efforts in environmental control (the purifier actual...

Now that is a well controlled comparison. Thanks for posting Hobbyst. Number 11) looks like a top of the line homogenous immersion system, really nice and crispy. I only have the universal condenser D position darkfield option at my disposal and I've used it with water which produced ok results at l...

Very morbid, interesting nontheless. I find it cool that you can link a specific crime scene locale to the species identified during a forensic pathology investigation.

Re: Condensers, how do you properly use them?
I use water instead of oil on the condenser for high NA objectives, its a decent compromise (according to my math it allows a cone of light with NA=1.2) ... Is that number less than 1.33 because it is based on some criteria like 50% transmission rather than critical angle? I never said I was good i...

Re: Condensers, how do you properly use them?
- I read Abbe condensers have to be oiled with higher than NA 1.0 objectives; is that so? can all abbe condensers be oiled? - Do you need an apo condenser to use high end apo lenses? like those 60/1.40 Oil ones.. I use water instead of oil on the condenser for high NA objectives, its a decent compr...

These are really good images. Ascorbic acid is great as Greg mentioned, just make sure its the acid not the sodium salt (sodium ascorbate) which really doesn't want to crystalize. Also a personal favourite of mine is acetaminophen (known as paracetamol in Europe and tylenol in the states), its readi...

Observed strange structures inside an amoeboid. Appear small and round in size, very motile but restricted to a vacuole-like structure. Anyone seen anything like that?

Hi Michael, I once attempted to write a post about the nature and use of wave plates. You can find it here: https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8197&p=71875#p71875 In short the retardation plate is a piece of optically anisotropic material that exhibits direction-depen...

Multiple washes with deionized water, then submerge the coverlips under ethanol. Whenever I need a coverslip I use tweezers to grab one and let the ethanol evapore on its own, it doesn't leave traces if its sufficiently clean.viktor j nilsson wrote: ↑Thu Feb 11, 2021 9:22 pmBtw, how do you dry the cover glass after the piranha bath?
