Yep, the rotifer came out through the side of the cell not back through the peristome. Well, we have now high-jacked this thread, but since I was the OP, I think it's OK.zzffnn wrote:But now I see that cell penetration. Wow!

Re: Ever see a Lacrymaria bite an Amphileptus?
Thanks Bill. My son just watched it. Does Stentor usually eat other ciliates, flagellates or rotifers? I wonder if it let go that rotifer on purpose, or reluctantly? No, Stentors are filter feeders eating whatever gets swept in by the currents their cilia create. Usually small stuff like bacteria a...

Re: making progress
The only ID help I can offer is that I'm pretty sure that is a bdelloid rotifer. I don't think the next set is a Paramecium, but I'm not certain. The last one looks like a diatom. Hopefully, someone will chime in and give a more knowledgeable opinion.

Re: Ever see a Lacrymaria bite an Amphileptus?
Оh my God, I did not know that Lacrymaria could bite off a piece of a big ciliate  . Excellent catch! Thanks, Microbia. I had read about this ("Lacrymaria feed primarily on small ciliates, flagellates, and amoeba, although on occasion they will tear chunks out of larger ciliates for food." -...

Great capture! Thank you for sharing, Bill. Even my 7yo, who usually does not show interest microscopy, is a fan of your YouTube channel. Re: Dinner for three
Nicely done, Microbia! :D At first it looked like the big one had a huge advantage with the smaller ones unable to push it aside. But then it turns out that the smaller ones, being small enough to get inside the dead rotifer, get far more food than the big one. A nice illustration of how what looks ...
