Yes, the article I reference to on Nikon U mentions correction collars for coverslips in immersion objects, which also states they are expensive as is that $7000 objective.

Although this talks about correction collars with immersion objectives...this is confusing:

I think you're right Gekko! Correction collars on non-immersion objectives and not immersion objectives.

It is primarily do to differences in cover slip thickness. Not all coverslips are the same thickness and the higher the NA of an objective, the more sensitive it is to coverslip thickness and the correction collar corrects for that.

The optivar was standard on Zeiss large research stands like the Ultraphots, Universals and Photomicroscopes when they came out in the late 50s I believe. It also was an optional intermediate piece in the GFL, WL and Standards both black and grey stands.

I realize a lot of folks aren't really into tearing apart various microscopes and don't need but an amount to use for only their one or two scopes, so this isn't really appealing, but for people who do, it's a nice deal.

As an aside to Apo's cleaning technique which is probably very good for many makes of objectives, but for older Zeiss objectives, Zeiss does not recommend using alcohol to clean their objectives. They state it will attack the cements in them although for the newer objectives it should be okay. Only ...

I'll echo what Gekko says. I use bulb air and lens brush first. I also use Zeiss lens cleaning fluids and texwipes.

There are two methods. In some like the Zeiss, they have three set screws around the circumference which keep the diopter ring in place. In others there is one central screw which attaches to a plate.

Most scopes only have diopter settings on one eyetube. The way to set it up is to focus on a specimen only using the eyepiece with out the diopter settings and the fine focus. Once you have that focused, look through the eyepiece with the diopter setting and turn it (the diopter ring) until that eye...

Yes, I remember now there was that pin. Those are talen lenses to keep the system at the right 160mm TL. I have never tried to put two intermediate pieces on my scopes but I think 75RR put two intermediate pieces on his Zeis RA, an optivar and a two head cube, and he had to mount it in that configur...

Have you tried reversing the order. Pol intermediate piece with top lens removed and the optivar on top with the bottom lens removed. These weren't really designed to stack one intermediate piece ontop of another.

BTW, The optivar looks loose in the picture. The optivar is connected by four set screws under a surface plug. The left side looks like it needs to be pushed up and the set screw tightened.
