Re: Diatoms from the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, alternative cleaning and mounting technique
Hi together, I tried to make a comparison to get a better understanding about how much Zeiss DIC "alt" can manage in fine detail compared to other illumination methods. The objective was a Leitz NPL Fluotar 100:1 n.a, 1,32 which works, but with some colour gradient. Each stacked from dozens of image...

Re: Cover Slip Consequences Collage
That is an interesting aspect! I knew that the image changes this way, but I didn't know that it is just this small difference. And this is really a challenge with placton photograpy - maintain a thin layer to get good images and keep it thick enough for the bigger specimens to survive. If one would...

Re: Diatoms from the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, alternative cleaning and mounting technique
I took these photos with my Nikon 1J5 that is directly connected to an older Leitz Periplan objective and 8mm spacer to come to a 10mm eyepiece pickup point. I just plunged the camera in the bino tube an can rotate it if necessary to get the object in the frame. Right now I have mounted a rectangula...

Re: Diatoms from the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, alternative cleaning and mounting technique
Hi together, I found some more time to look through Doron's Pleurax.mounted slide. It is always astonishing, how long one can look at a strew slide and still found new diatom forms sponge needles and other interesting oblects. Here a fragment od a beautilful diatom, there was just this single one so...

As far as I know the stated values have to be set at the scales of the object guide on to of a rotating polarisation microscope stage. It is intended for the microscope table with the stated number and was sold together with it. By using it you can quickly center the stage when necessary. "Nonius" m...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?
Hi Michael, the phase telecope should give you a sharp view of the phase rings. First adjust the focus to the slide and the condenser and field aperture to Köhler condition. If it doesn't focus it might not be a phase telescope at all or lenses are missing or are mixed up inside. These are simply bu...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?
Hi Glen, thank you for checking this. The 0,9 top lens is nowhere mentioned in combination with DIC "alt" but it might nontheless work very well. As far as I know the dic prisms limit the n.a. of the condenser to 0,9 anyway so there may be little actual loss. I plan to design a 3D-printable box for ...

Do you have information about the top lenses that were available? I have a n.a. 1,4 and 0,63 but there may have been a 0,9 too. This could be useful to find other working DIC combinations.75RR wrote:Here is some info on the 465277 condenser model:

Re: Plancton net material comparison
For a conical net the material is a bit expensive, but for filters made from plastic tubes and stainless mesh it is ideal. The mesh can simply be welded onto the tube with any piece of metal that has more than the melting temperature of the plastic. For plancton fishing one can just pour 20 beakers ...

Hi together,
for comparison I show here a picture of the stainless steel mesh I like to use. It is either 25µ or 50µ.
Compared to the plastic fibre net material it is more precisely woven and quite robust.

Hi Michael, thank you for the brick wall test! There was a very interesting thread about this photo adapter in the german mikroskopie-forum.de: https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/index.php?topic=23644.0 The conclusion is that the 63mm lens is not really up to the performance of today's digital sensors...

Re: Stains and dyes??
In any case stain(s) and mountant will have to fit together. The mountant shouldn't draw out the stain and the ph value of the mountant has to fit to the stain so it doesn't loose its colours over time. For plant sections FCA Etzold or W3A Wacker stain are proven and work well with Euparal mountant....

That ebay -Junior is a fairly new "Chromleisten-Junior" - it has different guides for the stage, probably roller bearings like the later Standard RA ... Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?
Hi Glen, I had a look at the tube port of an old Standard Junior and an old Zeiss-Winkel GFL. Both have a brown anodized looking surface. From the look of the slightly worn edge this could even be aluminium. From the weight it is not really feasible that there is much aluminium in the construction. ...

Re: Information about a microscope
Hi Phil,
I have made two phase rings from sheet metal discs, held together with a wire that is glued on top. I think I used 0,3mm aluminium and punched it out with a high quality hole punch set. From there a bit of manual work. It's been a while since but I think they were quite precise.

are you sure it is made of brass? My impression was that most cast microscope stands of this era were made from cast iron.

Re: Plancton net material comparison
Hi Michael, the middle two materials offer quite regular mesh sizes. I like stainless steel mesh better for sieves: Stronger, more precise, easy to weld to a ring and easy to clean. These nets can probably cause trouble when you sample in sensitive environments since they tend to keep part of the ca...
