Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Well the vacation is over and it's back to understanding the Zeiss Standard that I now own. I have noticed that while the condenser slide arm carries the upper Auxiliary lens as shown in the literature the lower unit is not the simple filter holder but rather carries optics in a 2.5 mm deep swing in...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

In answer to Hobbyist question, the objective turret does belong to the Standard. But as I learn more about the instrument I find that the 5 ports are not parcentral making it necessary to realign the condenser for each objective change. The top edge of the knurled chrome ring on the turret does sho...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Well I drew a complete blank, there was no sign of any DIC components other than the condenser. Still I have a good foundation for starting to assemble the remaining pieces and the phase system seems to work well. Thanks for everyone for all the help and advice given over the past few days. I do now...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Thanks 75RR, that is what I thought, but the top silver ring and the black knurled ring with the aperture markings did not want move independently on either of the condensers. Armed with your confirmation i applied a lot more finger pressure and they move now, but they're very still very stiff.I exp...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

I now have a very basic question, how do I adjust the iris on the CARL zEISS phase condensers? Both of the condensers move freely between the phase or dic plates, but I can't change the iris on the J setting. On the phase condenser it is stuck fully open and on the phase/dic one it is 80% closed. Wh...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Thanks for the help gents, things are starting to become clearer, but I've a long way to go! I will run Bobs great summary document through Google translate and send it back to Bob for his editing.

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Dear Bob, the condenser is as you suggested, DIC I, II,III, J, 2 3. The 1.4 element is blue/green, definitely not red. If you could send me your document on these old DIC systems that would be much appreciated. Thanks to 75RR for the link to dis-assembling a condenser. The items are from an estate, ...

Re: Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

Thanks Bob and 75RR, and yes it is a beautiful instrument, I’m lucky to have picked it up. Thanks for the link to manual too, I looked at the Zeiss archive as suggested but haven't tried digging there yet The microscope has two Phase condensers, one of which has 3 DIC positions. Unfortunately, one o...

Which model of Carl Zeiss Standard is this?

I recently came into possession of this stand and haven't been able properly identify it. I believe it is a "Standard" but which model? On a related note is there an archive of serial numbers for Carl Zeiss instruments?

Thanks

Re: Purple spot on Field Lens

75RR, As far a I know the illumination is standard BH2 (image attached), I've never tried to open it to inspect it because the hotspot doesn't appear to be interfering with the visual observing or DSLR imaging. I have occasionally seen a faint blue area close to the centre of an image when the afoca...

Purple spot on Field Lens

The field lens on my Olympus BH2 has a bright perfectly circular hot-spot visible at the centre of the field lens. When the field diaphragm is closed to a minimum the hot-spot is only a pinpoint, when fully open it is about 3mm. I have no trouble achieving Kohler illumination over 10/0.30 - 40/0.95....

Pete, thanks for the interesting idea. I'll add it to the list for when I meet again with the owner. Meantime I'll continue drawing up the inventory and testing them. Lots of work, lots of fun.
Thanks

Re: Help identifying microscope models

Bob, you identify my dilemma – trying to match sophisticated equipment with appropriate local recipients. The current owner had thought about local high schools, I had thought about a local ecology centre and a marine research foundation. We had’nt considered the idea of selling some or all of the c...

Re: Help identifying microscope models

Thanks to 75RR and MicroBob for identifying the CarlZeiss unit and the cautions about its use, this will all be very helpful in deciding its future.
Now I'm hoping for similar advice about the Diaphot and the Axioskop!

Help identifying microscope models

I have been asked by the widow of a friend (and microscopy prof.) to advise on donating his instruments to appropriate local educational establishments. There is an Axioskop and I think it is a model 50, a Nikon Diaphot and a CarlZeiss trinoc with Pol. My own experience is mostly with AO and Olympus...

Re: Olympus BH2 - AFocal vs projection eyepiece?

Thanks Oliver. Sorry, but I wasn’t clear, the comparison I am trying to make is an afocal setup (40mm Canon lens+Olympus 10x compensated eyepiece) versus an NFK 1.67 projection lens directly to camera sensor . Using the formulae from Charles Krebs page the images sizes/degrees magnification of the i...

Olympus BH2 - AFocal vs projection eyepiece?

I am experimenting with an afocal setup, coupling my Canon APSC camera to an Olympus BH2 using an Olympus corrected eyepiece in the trinoc. photo-port. Using the 40 mm camera lens with an the 10x eyepiece gives me a field at the sensor very similar in size (1.6x mag) to that that would be produced b...

Re: Pregnant Tardigrade?

I think the Tardigrades are after me! I found what I think is another egg mass yesterday in a sample from the same pond as the earlier one. This time there is no sign of a moult and there are at least a dozen eggs. The image was taken with a 20x objective on a Canon DSLR in AFocal mode on my BH2. Th...

Pregnant Tardigrade?

Micro_4129a1000.jpg I seem to have captured a heavily pregnant tardigrade. The 5 eggs in the ovary are filling the internal space rather completely! The specimen came from a sample taken in sunken leaf litter at the edge of a pond in coastal BC, under ice for the last week or so. The image was take...

I tried looking at a front-surfaced mirror through my microscope. Flaws in the silvering behave like stars and reveal their Airy discs going into and out of focus.

Re: Heine Condenser and Kohler illumination

Brad, thanks for the reply. I had believed that the sharply focused field iris step in the Kohler procedure was especially important when setting up "regular" phase contrast, and that would apply even with the unusual light paths of the Heine. I live and learn!
Thanks

Heine Condenser and Kohler illumination

I am learning to use a Heine Condenser on an Olympus BH2 with a custom adapter. I can centre it using the internal phase ring as a guide and the results it delivers have been quite good in DF and BF. However I can’t find a setting of either the condenser height or the Heine internal optics adjustmen...

I have the following items for sale, they comprise the components needed to add a pair of binocular heads to a standard BH2. The oculars are the L and the LH pairs, all are Widefield, and one is also High Eyepoint. They have been used carefully as teaching tools in the office of a pathologist. I wou...
