Manfred, (or anybody who would like to help)
What can you tell me about the Wacker FCA stain you used? I had not heard of it.
Thanks
Rod

Perhaps it is my fresh experience, and less than optimal results speaking, but this is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! I had planned to take another run at this subject tonight, but your shot may have defined the genre for all time. Anything I might post will look like a mud pie now! ;^) Would love to hear ...

Pine Needle II
After seeing the possibilities that Manfred so capably demonstrated on his Pine Needle posting earlier today, it reinforced my desire to take another run at it. Tonight I placed more attention on my microtome cuts, and switched to a camera that gives me a bit more control over focus than the handhel...

Those colors are just outstanding! And the mix of subjects is really interesting.
I am looking forward to some warmer weather so that I can collect some living subjects for study.
Nice work

Pine Needle Cross Section
Tonight's project was a cross section of a pine needle. It tested my still developing skills in nearly every way, and I am not declaring victory. First was cutting the sections. Using a hand microtome, I am sure you can imagine just how tiny these devils were. Getting them off of the razor, then on ...

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments.
I did cut the sections using a hand microtome. That is a bit of an art form that I am still learning.

A couple of looks at a cilantro leaf.
The first is a cross section. 45x objective, brightfield, afocal using a Nexus 6 phone
The second caught my attention when I discovered the nicely visible xylem in the middle of the field. Same technical set up.
Thanks for looking.

Superb images! Beautiful colors and patterns. The quality you get from your cell-phone camera is also excellent. Thanks Gekko. I pains me a bit, having enjoyed photography since high school, to find myself using a phone, but it is hard to argue with the results. I tried a couple of point and shoots...

Rotate the stage 15° to 45° and watch the colours change.
Safranin has some very colourful crystal formations.
I have spent some time trying all the different powers/polarizer setting/field compositions.
Never ending beautiful possibilities.
Thanks for responding

Can't help much with the ID, but it is very well executed, sharp shot of a cool "whatever-it-is".
Nicely done.

Very nicely done.
I prefer the first of the two original images. The color palate is a bit nicer to my eyes. The wider field version has a short of oriental art feel to it for me.
Like it!
