Re: Optiphot nose piece question

I was most interested in this post, as I have an Optiphot 1 and a Labophot 2. The former has a nosepiece like the one illustrated, with no extra lens, and having the objectives facing towards the user. However, the Labophot 2 nosepiece has them facing away, which as Pete says, is much more convenien...

Welcome to the microscopic world Mark. If you need help getting started making crystal slides, or getting polarising material for your microscope, just PM me. The variety that different chemicals give is amazing, and no two slides you make are the same. It is one of my favourite pastimes for a wet s...

Re: ND filter vs filter for phase contrast

The ND filters are merely to reduce the light intensity. Whilst it might seem that this is possible just using the rheostat to reduce brightness, for photomicrography, the bulb is run at a certain voltage/current to attain a suitable (known) colour temperature. This was more important for film than ...

Re: nice microscope c.1900 but with puzzling objective type

Sounds to me as if it is an anastigmat lens, designed for photography, hence the iris. More modern (but still 1970s onwards) equivalents are the Zeiss Luminar and Leitz Photar range. They form a real image, without an eyepiece and give magnification ranges from x1 to x 20 isn, depending on focal len...

Any ideas anyone, is this true?

I am looking forward to reading your thoughts on it. It would be especially great if at some point you get a chance to try it side by side with a classic used starter scope like an olympus ch2, nikon labophot series or something from AO or whatever. That might be a logistical challenge though. Are ...

I'd be curious about points to set ups and part lists as well: There are a bunch on ebay. But it would be great to get details on how to use and which ones and differences: https://lavinia.as.arizona.edu/~mtuell/scopes/condenser_list.html https://www.ebay.com/itm/NIKON-PHASE-CONTRAST-SET-WITH-CASE/...

Re: Used Diaphot

It looks to me as if the condenser fitted is the ELWD NA 0.3 type, which was the standard one usually supplied from what I can gather. It has only phase inserts, namely Ph L, Ph1, Ph2 and Ph3, with no bright-field setting as such. To set up the lamp and the field diaphragm, you use the Ph L setting,...

The matter of the microscope is mostly settled, but a set of objectives for phase contrast, or plan objectives is of interest. hi i come across a leitz pol condenser ,and bought it. NO analyzer To try and answer more than one question at once... 1. A condenser wouldn't come with an analyser, that has to be above the objective. Yours does seem to have polarising material in the lower holder. 2. A 'Pol' condenser designation...

Mike - Yes, the optovar is the name for the magnification changer (which is what it may say in the literature) and should have some metal knurled rings that turn, plus some numbers, such as 1, 1.6, 2 and Ph. The large slider comes out, though you may need to loosen the large screw on the opposite s...

Re: Zeiss Universal - I think - Lot's of Questions

Hi Mike, Yes, this is a Universal II model. You are right, a camera cannot fit where there is a light train for the incident light set-up (top lamp). Question - my understanding of the Photomicroscope series is there was quite an optical train to direct light to the internal camera, the eyepieces a...

Yes, this is a Universal II model. You are right, a camera cannot fit where there is a light train for the incident light set-up (top lamp). The stand has obviously been set up for fluorescence work at some stage. You need to be careful in relation to any mercury vapour bulb that may be fitted. It m...

In 2006, following an idea sent in to him, Ernie Ives, who made thousands of wood sections (and other slides) over many years, made very successful ringing tables out of obsolete hard drives from computers. He wrote about this, at length, with full practical details in the column he wrote in 'Balsam...

Zufar

I assume you realise there is another part that is required to attach to your microscope? Unless you have a VANOX that is.

There were different adapters, such as the PM-ADG-3, PM-ADP and PM-ADF that fit to your microscope and then the Adapter L fits to.

Yes I agree with 75RR, this does not look like a BH scope but as CHB. From the illumination port and stage, at least. A BH-2 would be a better choice than these ones, being expandable and using 45mm parfocality objectives. The CHB takes short barrel objectives (ca 36mm). Yes, the CH series, and it ...

The Alphaphot seems expensive for what was a student stand, and no trino head.

The Labophot is better, but only has x40 and x100 lenses.

I would keep looking.

As ever, you are getting some good advice here. One of the best bits is not to act in haste. It is not like computers and most of the modern technology, in that there is never a good time to buy, but rather that you will hope to develop with your microscope. Thus being able to get things for it, and...
